I integrated 3 builds into multiPE version 63.

They are choosen via multiPE >> Tools >> WB Manager.

Just download multiPE 63, define a W7 source folder and click the blue play triangle.
When the dialog tells you that the environment has been changed to build a Win7PE, navigate to the above mentioned script and choose the build you want. Then click the play button.

Sizes (ISO / WIM in MB):
W7_Micro: 72.9 / 68.8
W7_Nano: 70.7 / 66.6
W7_Pico: 67.7 / 63.6

Micro is a "reasonable" build with console tools like Format, Attrib and with ShutDownPE, 7z and Notepad.
Nano is a without the tools.
Pico has artificially downsized ressources. But all necessary Icons still are valid and provided. Only unneeded ressources like AVI and boot bitmaps are removed.

As in the standard multiPE projects the PE can be built from different language sources.
One restriction: In the small version only Western languages are supported. East Asian boot fonts will increase the size by more than 10 MB.
But the restriction can be easily skipped by simply adding these fonts.

Yes, but if you have some spare time, you could finalize/update/revamp/whatever the fsredir, a little tool that seems to me like a great idea that could make with some refining and some more "visibility" (I would presume that right now 0.3% of reboot.pro members and possibly 3% of those actually developing PE's know about the thingy).

It seems I even forgot how to make WinPE. I now learning winbuilder. Very interesting tools

 

I've been making copy-on-write driver for few months now, guess there should be no problem updating that fsredir driver.

Exactly , this is seemingly an approach that for whatever reasons is not "liked" by developers that probably simply miss the fact that by separating a "CORE" (loaded initially, expecially from slow devices such as CD/DVD's and USB - up to USB 2.0 - bus) from the "REST" they can have much faster boot times, both "objectively" and "subjectively", load on machines with less RAM and more generally provide more flexibility.

The ONLY thing you CANNOT do is to hint that al_jo's downloads don't work well and propose alternatives.

@ Syahmi , The intention is not just the smallest boot.wim but rather the whole ISO size. Nevertheless, if you present the smallest possible sized boot.wim and use fsredir in the process, this would be

The goal is not to have a wim below 100MB, but to have a the whole PE below 100MB.

I'm surprised that noone came up with the idea of a Cloud7PE.
Guess everyone was way to busy, making the least useful PE under 100MB, to think about the second objective of this contest, for making it the coolest under 100MB.

I'm working on enhancements.

Currently the W7_Micro ISO size decreased from 72.9 MB to 71.9 MB (w/o loss of some functionality).
W7_Pico ISO from 67.7 MB to 66.8 MB

Other languages or SP1 may be slightly different

Milli: 87,9 / 92,4

Milli with Opera has an ISO of 98,0 Mb

It is my pleasure to announce the gold medal winner of the 2012 reboot competition: Peter Schlang.

 

Peter has slimmed windows 7 with an expertise level that is legendary, therefore worthy of the 2012 reboot award.

 

 

Taking the silver medal is al_jo with his set of mini-projects. Besides the active participation with great projects, al_jo has impressed the juri with his outstanding good-sport attitude across the competition.

 

With this event we managed to prove that creating slimmer windows is possible and an interesting bit of computer history has been written.

 

 

To all who participated, supported, commented and followed this event, thank you very much!

I know this is a small community (and that is probably the plan) but you guys could make it a little easier for a newbie to understand what happens here.

 

First: it would be nice to have a link to the post announcing the winner in the email sent to all users. It just says "The winners of the 2012 reboot competition that aimed to find the smallest Windows 7 PE on world have been announced."

 

Second: the winner Peter Schlang refers to user pscEX, right?

 

Third: it would be nice to have a link to multiPE 64 (the winning project) on the announce post. Or at least to multiPE (since it has been updated to version 71, if I understand correctly)

Maybe Peter finds some time to create and upload a special version of the project that is "frozen" so that other users can replicate the results. This would be interesting to keep in future years from now.

Everything I published during the competition, was part of the actual multiPE project which I changed accordingly

 

When you download multiPE from the download center, you can reproduce the "downsized" PEs by

• Start the multiPE project
• Choose a source CD folder
• Using  multiPE > Tools > WB Manager
• Choose W7_Micro, W7_Nano or W7_Pico resp and click "Restore Set"
• Click the blue "Build" triangle

For the future, W7_Micro, W7_Nano or W7_Pico will not be changed because they are "experimental", not "productive"

 

BTW: The W7_Standard ISO is also rather small with about 110 MB.

If you mean "how many members published valid projects?" then the answer is indeed two.

 

The rules were simple but the goal was difficult to reach. I'm happy to see two members posting very good results.

Yeah, I agree, 2 isn't much.

 

The thing is, to most of us, Windows 7 is still 'young'.

So much has been done with Xp, reducing the OS to a minimal thing.

In time presumably, more will understand how-to, just like now I think xp should be approachable.

One difference for example is the Wim files, etc. Previous OSes (nt based) were just Ntldr and an img file.

 

The competition was a great initiative, to see what can be done.

Overmore, what can be doine with recent OS.

For the record I am not criticizing the two winners or their proposed projects, on the contrary, I am very happy that there were such nice projects .

 

I was criticizing the fact that this is not (for lack of other submissions) a race, but rather a duel, a strange kind of duel, where BOTH competitors win (and thanks of course to Elegantinvention for donating two isosticks ).

 

It was only about calling things with their names.
