Wimb,

very, very interesting and valuable job !.

I appreciated a lot.     :1st:

One only question (before reading the readme/instructions) :

Do the 3 tools work with pen-flash drives only or with USB hard-disks too ?

How to make Multi-Boot USB-Stick with 2 partitions FAT32 + NTFS

1. Download and Run UFD_FORMAT_80.exe and Extract to simple path
In Win 7/8 OS Set User Account Control Off and Reboot
2. UFD_FORMAT.exe - Format Stick is used to make USB-Stick with two Partitions
Select USB-Stick as Target Drive and Select 2nd Partition Checkbox
3. USB_Part_Flip.exe is used so that (unformatted) 2nd Partition becomes visible in Windows
4. Use Windows Format to give 2nd Partition NTFS Format and Label USB_SYS
5. Use UEFI_MULTI.exe in Win 7/8 OS to Add VHD Boot Image files to NTFS USB_SYS drive
For UEFI support then Windows 8x64 is needed as operating system
6. Copy all files except VHD file to external folder e.g. U_BOOT in folder UFD_FORMAT
7. USB_Part_Flip.exe is used so that 1st Partition USB_BOOT becomes visible in Windows
8. Copy content of U_BOOT folder (the boot files) to USB_BOOT Drive
9. Use UEFI_MULTI.exe to Add WIM or ISO Boot Image files to USB_BOOT drive (USB-Stick)
10. Boot from USB-Stick - In Boot Manager menu select boot-WIM or Grub4dos Menu

UEFI Secure boot is possible with boot.wim of Windows 8 x64 Recovery Stick

In Grub4dos Menu select Win8 VHD for booting fom RAMDISK

In some cases F12 at the beep reboots UEFI into BIOS mode and allows to select Grub4dos menu
Otherwise you have to change settings in UEFI firmware to allow booting in BIOS-mode and to get Grub4dos Menu

UFD_FORMAT is Tool to Format USB Flash Drives so that they can be used by UEFI_MULTI program

to make Multi-Boot UFD booting with Boot Manager menu and Boot Image files of type ISO or WIM or VHD

USB_Part_Flip is meant for USB Flash Drives but has option to use it on USB-Harddisk as well.

UEFI_MULTI can be used with USB Flash Drives or USB-Harddisk

OK, so that one could use only USB_Part_Flip and UEFI_MULTI in case of USB HD.

Now the question is : "Can UFD_Format be easily "adapted" in order to work for an HD as well, or is there an alternative/similar way/tool, having the same features of UFD_FORMAT but applicable to a USB HD ?"

USB-Harddisk with FAT32 Boot Partition and NTFS System Partition can be prepared with 7/8 Disk Management and using Windows Format.

Windows does not allow to make two partittions in USB-Stick, so that is why a special Tool like UFD_FORMAT is made.

USB-Stick prepared by UFD_FORMAT can be used in UEFI_MULTI to make Multi-Boot USB-Stick with WIM ISO and VHD Boot Image files.

USB-Harddisk with FAT32 Boot Partition and NTFS System Partition can be prepared with 7/8 Disk Management and using Windows Format.

While I well know that 7/8 Disk Management can create FAT32 partition, I am not so sure that partition is really bootable with MS-DOS 7.x.
In other words, I know that for a FAT32 partition be bootable with MS-DOS 7.x, its bootsector need to be "special", with io.sys and MS-DOS.sys as 1st and 2nd call/file in the bootrecord.

Can Win7 Disk Management create this ?

No, but nothing prevents you to change the bootsector.
http://www.sysint.no...ting/mbrfix.htm

MbrFix /drive <num> /partition <part> fixbootsector <os>
.....
When fixing boot sector of a chosen partition, the wanted OS version must be specified. For now, the only valid choices are WIN98, DOS5 and DOS6.
The purpose of the fixbootsector command is to insert boot code for loading DOS from a partition created and formatted as FAT using the Windows 2000/XP/2003 tools, since those tools inserts boot code for loading NTLDR.

may be you could create a new one for usb stick , with few options and dedicated to grub for dos .

first option could be to select the size of the mft for ntfs .

second option could be to copy mft at end of drive or right after the grub4dos files : grldr and menu.lst .

may be it could handle usb2 grub4dos option [ http://reboot.pro/to...-usb2-settings/ ] and be able to use new versions beside embedded files

all that would help to have vhd in one piece

UEFI_MULTI.exe will make USB-drive bootable with Windows 7 x64 VHD (booting in BIOS mode)

Only Windows 8 x64 VHD  can boot in UEFI or BIOS mode.
For this purpose run UEFI_MULTI.exe in 7/8 x64 OS.

I used UFD_FORMAT to format 2GB USB stick  FAT32+NTFS.

It boots in MBR an UEFI mode, but in UEFI boot, when I select  grldr entry I get a 7b BSOD for C:\grldr.

I have a Win8.1 system (I did not disable UAC). Any ideas what I did wrong?

I tried it both on a real system and using VBOX with same result.

It is normal behaviour since booting Grub4dos is not available in UEFI mode.

Win8.1SE x64 boot.wim of size 400 MB is Universal WIM Boot Image file for booting BIOS and UEFI computers

http://www.msfn.org/...170546-win81se/

After UFD_FORMAT then use UEFI_MULTI.exe to add x64 boot.wim to Boot Manager Menu of Target USB-Stick

so that you can boot fast in BIOS or UEFI mode from USB-Stick with Win8.1SE x64 boot.wim and boot into RAMDISK.

Aim: To boot via UEFI and install Windows 8 from a 'Removable' type USB Flash drive.  The install.wim file is >4GB, so I guess I need a FAT32 partition and an NTFS partition

Question: Can I create such a USb stick using UFD_FORMAT and UEFI_MULTI, etc. - If so how?

UEFI_MULTI cannot 'see' the 2nd partition under Windows. I can swap over the partition table but then it cannot see the FAT32 partition... :dubbio:

It s possible to use Removable type USB Flash drive, but it is more convenient to use Portable USB harddisk for that purpose,

since in case of using UFD Flash Drive then it requires to use USB_Part_Flip.exe several times to make the required partition (FAT32 or NTFS) visible when needed.

Everything can be done with the programs and description given in UEFI_MULTI

http://reboot.pro/to...boot-usb-drive/

Step 1 - Use UFD_FORMAT to prepare UFD with 2 partitions (1st partition visible with FAT32 Format)

Step 2  - Prepare Boot Image file - 8.1SE x64 WIM http://www.msfn.org/...170546-win81se/

Step 3 - Use UEFI_MULTI.exe to add Win8.1 SE x64 boot.wim as Boot Image file for FAT32 Boot partition of USB-Stick

Step 4 - Use USB_Part_Flip.exe  or BootIce to make 2nd partition visible in Windows - Then Format USB-Stick 2nd partition with NTFS

Add everything you need to NTFS partition of USB-Stick, such as WinNTSetup3 folder and Win 8.1 x64 ISO file

Step 5 - Use USB_Part_Flip.exe or BootIce  to make 1st partition FAT32 of USB-Stick visible in Windows

Step 6 - Boot with USB-Stick in UEFI mode from Boot Manager Menu and select x64 boot.wim for booting from RAMDISK

Step 7 -  Use USB_Part_Flip.exe or BootIce to make 2nd partition NTFS of USB-Stick visible in Windows

Step 8 - Launch WinNTSetup_x64.exe and prepare local harddisk partition for Install of Windows 8.1

http://www.msfn.org/...winntsetup-v35/

BootIce - Use Parts Manage > Set Accessible to make 2nd partition of USB_Stick visible in Windows

USB_BOOT Drive F: is a second USB-Stick that I use as Boot Drive for booting Win 8.1 Installed in 1_SYSTEM drive G:

It would be nice if the FAT32 partition could be made to boot via BCD, directly to the NTFS partition if arrangement was:

ptn 1 = NTFS - contains Win8 Installer DVD files

ptn 2 = FAT32  - EFI bootable

Is this possible - even on a USB HDD?

It would be nice if the FAT32 partition could be made to boot via BCD, directly to the NTFS partition

This is quite well possible when using Win8.1 x64 VHD installed by UEFI_MULTI on 2nd NTFS partition

following the procedure as described here http://reboot.pro/to...at/#entry179323

But boot speed and performance of such VHD as FILEDISK on USB-Stick is not so good.

May be you can try to use Win8.1 x64 boot.wim file located on NTFS 2nd partition.

Requires to modify BCD entry manually e.g. by using BOOTICE

It can be done this way, but it does not solve the problem.

After booting with boot.wim located on NTFS 2nd partition, then the FAT32 1st partition is visible in WinPE environment.

It means you still have to use USB_Part_Flip.exe  to make NTFS 2nd partition with Win 8.1 ISO file visible in Windows.

I would not change partition sequence as you proposed.

Anyway  the efi Boot partition needs to be FAT32

In conclusion I think that portable USB-harddisk with MBR and FAT32 + NTFS partitions

as made bootable with Win8.1SE x64 boot.wim by UEFI_MULTI

is most suitable for the purpose of Install of Win 8.1 from ISO file located on NTFS partition.

Thanks for the help and answers. I found a way round my problem but it only works with USB HDDs, not Removable UFDs.

See here for details.

I also found that if the first partition is FAT32 and the 2nd is NTFS, then UEFI will boot, but if these are reversed then UEFI won't see the 2nd FAT32 partition and won't boot.

This is odd as the UEFI spec does not say anything about this.

Indeed the whole UEFI spec is 'vague'!

It doesn't specify any MBR boot conditions.

It doesn't explicitly say if it will UEFI-boot from a multi-partitioned 'removable' drive.

It doesn't even  define what it means by a 'Removable' drive! Is it a USB/eSATA drive or a drive that has the RMB bit set?

Yet again we have a spec designed by committee that is vague, has gaps and is, in some cases, misleading...

I have been using all your software since long time ago, to make 7PE's, XP and 7 VHD's and now tried UEFI_MULTI and every one of them works great, THANK YOU! for this fantastic tools.

This is my Adata 32 GB USB flash disk with two partitions:

EDIT: Alternative format procedure used: I just made a multipartition USB stick using RMPrepUSB for the first primary active partition and EasyUS PartitionMaster 10 to make an unformated second primary partition, later using BootIce formated it to exFAT.

1.- First primary partition 1.9 GB FAT32 type 0C active partition; used UEFI_MULTI to copy Win8.1SE_x64 boot.wim file to root, an several other ISO's to directory Images, and make the boot files and EFI folder also Grub4dos mbr and grldr and make BCD option to boot Grub4dos. + I manually added BootIce, Hitachi Microdrive Filter Driver folder and Karyonix – diskmod.sys folder (both having x64 versions)

2.- Second primary partition 28 GB exFAT; after make it visible to windows using BootIce, manualy copied Win7 and Win8 install ISO's, + WinNTSetup (BootIce included in tools folder), Hitachi Microdrive Filter Driver folder and Karyonix – diskmod.sys folder, then make visible to windows the FAT32 partition.

3.- Boot from USB to Win8.1SE_x64 boot.wim (it was a MBR PC, I don't have my UEFI win8 laptop with me at the moment), I tried to install diskmod.sys to be able to see the second partition too, a message saying something like "Windows has the best driver already installed" and no way to install it, same hapend when tried Hitachi microdriver, so the other alternative I had just in case was BootIce and make the second partition visible to windows, then using WinNTSetup is possible to install 7 or 8.

4.- I reboot again from USB to Win8.1SE_x64 boot.wim this time I let the second partition visible, It booted just fine, so no need to switch back every boot.

Well after this loooong history I would like to suggest:

I) Add to your UFD_FORMAT tool the option to select FAT32 size in MB or GB, now is the remaining from NTFS selection (with new thumb drives sizes 25% for FAT32 to put some WinPE's may be to much), perhaps remove this option from NTFS and just use the remaining from first partition selection.

II) Add exFAT as an option for the second partition format.  Since long time ago XP-SP2 and newer systems are able to read and write in exFAT formated Volumes, I have been using this format for more than a year in all my USB flash disks, and I can tell you it is faster than NTFS, also it's able to content VHD's of big size and open them through Grub4Dos, another plus is files don't get fragmented so easy as in NTFS and finally less wear to your stick.

Also if you allow me  I have a question: Could it be possible to inject a filter driver to Win8.1SE_x64 to make it see both partitions?, it's not so important but I would like to know.

My UEFI_MULTI USB stick:       https://www.mediafir...fs585eq7tazlh61

Filter drivers:       http://www.mediafire..._in_Windows.rar

Best Regards

Added alternative format procedure followed to get partition sizes as required.

Hi alacran,

Thanks for using UEFI_MULTI and for your kind words about my programs.

UFD_FORMAT will only format the 1st partition (preferred is FAT32 for compatibility with booting on UEFI computers).

After using USB_Part_Flip.exe or BootIce Parts Manage (easier) to Set Accessible (the unformatted) 2nd Partition,

then you can use Windows Format and it is free to use any format for 2nd partition e.g. NTFS or exFat

The size of the 1st partition is already limited to about 2 GB when using MAX for 2nd partition size.

After booting with x64 boot.wim of Win8.1SE then it is simply to use BootIce to make 2nd partition of USB-Stick visible,

so that WinNTSetup_x64.exe can be used to select with r-mouse the Win 8.1 ISO file on 2nd partition of USB-Stick.

May be it is possible to use inject filter driver in Win8.1SE, but I have not done this yet, since using BootIce is very simple as described.

then you can use Windows Format and it is free to use any format for 2nd partition e.g.

Hi 'wimb'

First lots of thanks for both 'UFD FORMAT' and 'UEFI MULTI'...........

As you said that 'It is possible to use inject filter driver in Win8.1SE'. I want to use Inject Filter Drive in 'Win8.1SE' because it will be very easy for me to select Win 8.1 ISO file on 2nd partition of 'Removable' USB-Stick.
Actually I am a Visually Handicapped Student and do not want to use 'Bootice' anymore because it increase the number of Mouse-clicks which require lots of attention of my 'Eyes'. And also consume extra time. If 'Partition 2' will already be show in the File Explorer then it would be more easy task for me to select 'Win 8.1 ISO' file..............

Special Request- Till now I always used 'RMPrepUSB' in order to format and create 'Partition 1'. I think 'UFD FORMAT' will be more useful if it will also add manually 'Partition Size' option in order to create 'Partition 2' of desired Size along with 75%, 50%, 25%, MAX, MIN.............

I have lots of Hope from you.............

Please Help me.............

Thanks in Advance
