setup cannot find winvblock

winvblock.ima is present in VHD_XP_Setup\makebt folder and would have been copied next to XP-1.vhd

when you used VHD_XP_Create.exe to make Grub4dos menu as usual.

For Sound and Video I personally prefer to use:

Auto run of DriverForge at T-9  to add uncompressed driver folders in $OEM$\$1\Drivers

and use that for my well known Audio driver as described in Section 2

http://reboot.pro/to...hd/#entry172481

But if desired you can use DPsBase as used for the other 5 DriverPacks,

but it is a rather heavy load to extract all these (probably unneeded) Sound drivers during XP Setup.

Instead you can also decide to use DriverForge after XP Setup and point to folder D\S with extracted Sound drivers.

Personally I use RyanVM Integrator

RVM_Integrator_1.6.1b2.1.exe - http://cpu.reboot.pr...c.php?f=9&t=601

http://integrator.si...ex.php?download

Always first use RyanVM Integrator and then use DPsBase to Improve your XP-Source

This aproach works in combination with WinNTSetup v3.1

I have no present experience with nLite but it might be that nLite is not compatible with WinNTSetup v3.1

RVM Integrator is very old (2009)

but nlite (2013)

i will try to integrate using nlite and leave a comment

*** Update VHD_XP_Setup_80 - Install XP in VHD ***

VHD_XP_Create.exe can make Grub4dos Boot Menu suitable for XP VHD with NT Setup folders added later by WinNTSetup 3
Such approach can be useful when Virtual XP Setup CD is Not found in GUI-mode - Error is \i386\asms not found
For that case it is needed NOT to select the XP Setup ISO file, so that the NT Setup Grub4dos Menu will be made.

Download VHD_XP_Setup_80 - http://reboot.pro/fi...tall-xp-in-vhd/

This is well-known behaviour and there is no solution yet.

*** Update VHD_XP_Setup_81 - Install XP in VHD ***

- Only ISO filenames with dos 8.3 format are allowed
- Added WinContig useful to defragment VHD files
- Black Screen Fix for TXT-mode XP Setup by using map --e820cycles=0 in Grub4dos Menu before hook

Download VHD_XP_Setup_81 - http://reboot.pro/fi...tall-xp-in-vhd/

@Basel Sayeh
Can you test version 81 and report if Black Screen Fix of TXT-mode XP Setup is working OK for you.
Can you test the two methods for Install of XP in VHD
1. using XP Setup from Selected ISO file
2. using WinNTSetup3 to prepare NT Setup folders

Hey there,

i've a problem, i could not install XP in VHD...

the farest i can get, with XP iso in RAM (when i don't load iso in ram i get 7B BSOD) is to the XP TXt Setup screen where to pick the Disk to format...

there is just that the 2gb Disk could not be used...

i've tried on different Harddisks, internal, external, even on the boost stick itself...

most of the times i have problems earlier, i get boot from cd is not possible with code 1 or code 5... sometimes the screen then gets full of some cryptic signs...

any help is very appreciated

Did you integrate Chipset and MassStorage DriverPacks in your XP Setup ISO as described in Section 2 ?

http://reboot.pro/to...tall-xp-in-vhd/

Use DPsBase.exe to Integrate DriverPacks Chipset + Processor + MassStorage + LAN + WLAN DriverPacks
which will then be located in OEM Folder in your XPSOURCE folder.
(settings Disc - Method 2 - GuiRunOnce - Enable KTD for the DriverPacks I will Select)

It makes no sense to use the --mem option in your modified Grub4dos menu.

You want to Install in VHD, so it must be on harddisk and not in RAM.

AVAST also saw VHD_XP_Setup_85.exe as a threat, which is however a false positive.

Anyway I recompiled the programs and Uploaded the new VHD_XP_Setup_85.exe

Now AVAST finds it OK. Can you check if f-secure 9 is happy with the new version.

Download VHD_XP_Setup_85.exe http://reboot.pro/fi...tall-xp-in-vhd/

Thanks

How did you prepare your XP Setup ISO file ?

Do you use winnt.sif file and was it made according to sample given in XP-W7-Setup\XP-Setup\winnt_sif

Hello Wimb and everybody,

and thanks for this helpful tutorial.

I've always wanted to find a way to boot from VHD and it worked!

Despite of the inital success (it took me a couple of days and many tests,

but at the end the VHD boots fine), I'm having problems installing the drivers.

First of all, without installing any driver, the resolution is fixed to 640x480.

This is strange as the same setup ISO, installed onto a normal partition,

works natively up to 1024x768. What could be the cause of this?!?

I proceeded with the drivers then, and at reboot I got the Stop 4E error.

So I'm almost there but I need some hints/help to get the drivers working,

hopefully without the need of testing them one by one...

Other curiosities: on my mobo if I load the iso in ram the setup cannot

find the XP setup CD. If I load it normally I can installe everything.

Tried to put the vhd file in subdirectory VHDBOOT and booted correctly

a couple of times, then the VHD got corrupted.

Tried to put the vhd file in a drive other than C and booted correctly

a couple of times, then the VHD got corrupted.

Tried to run the USB_XP_Fix.exe on the bootable VHD file an it ended up

with "SYSTEM" as the only available user and no option to log off or change user.

Hopefully this method will become more stable and practical for everyday life.

I would love to be more partition-independent and have more XP/7/8 VHD images to

boot from!!!

Ciao,

Virgus

PS Has anybody installed an Ubuntu on a VHD file and booted with Grub?

Is there a "certified" how-to like the one Wimb created for us?

I'd love to have a partition just from VHDs and choose everytime what OS to boot from.

This is normal when you have have minlogon checkbox selected.

It is the default case which best suits universal use.

How did you prepare your XP Setup ISO file ?

The drivers must be integrated as 5 DriverPacks according to Section 2

http://reboot.pro/to...hd/#entry172481

Use DPsBase.exe to Integrate DriverPacks Chipset + Processor + MassStorage + LAN + WLAN DriverPacks
which will then be located in OEM Folder in your XPSOURCE folder.

Hi 'wimb'

Is it possible to have a fully functional 'XP_SP3.vhdx' file in a USB-HDD drive so that I can just copy whole 'XP_SP3.vhdx' file into a target system and add a boot entry of 'XP_SP3.vhdx' within \boot\bcd of system ?

I don't want to install XP again and again in every system. It will be very useful for me if I could install fully functional XP_SP3 into any system by just copying 'XP_SP3.vhdx' file.

Can your method help me for doing this ? Is any possibilities ?

Thanks for your amazing Tutorial...............
