I have here a very peculiar laptop.
It has a DVD-ROM/CDRW burner combo drive.

I can boot from Kanotix and Knoppix just fine. But every PE CD i have tryed, gives a no proper boot device error.
I already switched out the drive, but no use, same problem.
In case this matters, the DVD Drive is configured as Slave in this Laptop.

Now two my two questions.
1. Can anyone explain, why this happens?
2. How else can i get the laptop to boot into a PE.
- It can't boot from USB or Network and has no Floppy drive
- I can't install or copy anything to the HDD.

If only hdd boots, have you checked BIOS boot order settings? Put CD to first boot device and try again.

Why no copy/install to hdd? Can you remove the hdd and connect it to another PC (usb adapter etc.) to check/setup properly?

Maybe boot from ISO/grldr setup on hdd if CD not an option :drunk:

Try a normal El-torito floppy emulation CD, instead of the usual no-emulation ones.

Can you DETAIL EXACTLY the error you get?
This:

a no proper boot device error.

doesn't "sound" as the actual error you see on the screen.

Very funny. How do you think Kanotix and Knoppix manage to boot? ;)

Why no copy/install to hdd? Maybe boot from ISO/grldr setup on hdd if CD not an option :)

I can't fiddle with the HDD because there might some important documents deleted. At least Linux misses to show one folder.

Can you remove the hdd and connect it to another PC (usb adapter etc.) to check/setup properly?

Not at the moment, hence i'm stuck.

Can you DETAIL EXACTLY the error you get?

Boot failure
reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device
press any key when ready

What happens with an El_Torito floppy emulation .iso?

Like a DOS one?

@MedEvil
Which laptop do you use?
Which optical hardware do you use?
DVD-ROM/CDRW drive, CD/DVD media and used burner and burn application?

Which media do you use for Knoppix?
Which media do you use for PE?
Do you use different CD/DVD media manufacturer for Knoppix/PE? Name the ATIP.
Try high quality CD media and use ImgBurn to burn the ISO image, use a middle speed.

Does a default XP installation CD boot?

Which boot loader do you use currently?

Knoppix use Isolinux as boot loader.
Try Isolinux to launch the PE too.

Had unexpected visitors today, so i couldn't fiddle with it. Tomorrow i'm going to buy a 2,5 to 3,5 ide adapter and put the hdd into my desktop computer.

Still, thanks, to all those who were kind enough, to put their brain into gear, to help me.

Which laptop do you use?

It's a Gericom X5.

Which optical hardware do you use?
DVD-ROM/CDRW drive, CD/DVD media and used burner and burn application?

The tryed Knoppix/Kanotix and PE CD vary greatly in age. And so does the used Burner. Burnsoftware has always been Nero, though different versions. Also the manufacturer varies from samsung to memorex to verbatim to tdk to medion.

Which media do you use for Knoppix?

CD-R and CD-RW

Which media do you use for PE?

CD-R and CD-RW

Do you use different CD/DVD media manufacturer for Knoppix/PE? Name the ATIP.

Most CD-R are Samsung, So there are a few instances in which PE and Knoppix are on the same kind of CD.

Try high quality CD media and use ImgBurn to burn the ISO image, use a middle speed.

Which are High quality?
btw. I've tryed the older PE because those were created on slower burners, which usually leads to higher readability. But no change.

Does a default XP installation CD boot?

I didn't try.

Which boot loader do you use currently?

Knoppix use Isolinux as boot loader.
Try Isolinux to launch the PE too.

For PE i use the default M$ Bootloader.

Overall I suspect hardware:
a possible half broken CD reader (Slimline drives are not very reliable), half broken CD media, different altered CD media.
Knoppix/Kanotix media does boot by chance so far.

Possible, but a really strange chance. out of the 4 Linux CD all 4 booted, even the CD-RW one, which are usually the first to go.
Yet non of the 7 PE did.

But i have the data now and it's not my Laptop, so i do not really care if the drive or the BIOS actually has the problem.
