VistaPE with a VPN connection
Posted 22 September 2009 - 04:08 PM
I try to create a bootable USB Drive for the employees of the company where I work. The goal is to boot from it and have access to internet and the company's network through a VPN.
I tried to set this up with BartPE, UBCD4Win, LiveXP, VistaPE and Win7PE, but I did not achieve to establish a VPN connection so far. That brings me to my first post on this forum
So my questions are :
-Is there an existing script that permit to use Vista's native support of a PPTP connection to a VPN ? And if such thing exist, is it possible to preconfigure the settings for the connection ?
-If there's not, what about a script for a VPN Client ? (I have several version of Cisco VPN Client that I already tried on BartPE unsuccessfully).
Thanks for your help !
PS : Sorry for my english

Many VPN clients require lots of stuff configured appropriately. Do you have an SSL VPN? An SSL VPN can often be accessed through a browser.

I noticed during my research that I'm not the only one who try to do this. It would be a very powerful tool for non-advanced users if they could just plug their USB flash drive and connect the office network, from anywhere.
I don't know much about PE scripting, but maybe a script that adds the required files for the network functions of Vista would be the easiest way to manage to do it ?

another workaround could be to have the vpn connection virtualized in a virtual machine running in PE. Look over at www.sanbarrow.com for something called kiosk mode (kind of booting directly into a vm).
The virtual machine is just there to help you with the network connection that you cannot make directly in your PE. I guess it's also possible to make a network tunnel between PE and vm so you can choose where to work from (may require special configuration on the vpn server side..).

In my case, i use VistaPE to launch an OPENVPN connection.
I use Ipcop/Openvpn on a server.
This VPN run very fine on Vistape, he use a tape driver that load dynamically on each Vistape session.
Another thing to watch is netsh advanced firewall to make a vpn ipsec connection, but i never tried under Vistape.....
