IMHO and in my short experience with explorer.exe as a filemanager for vista, server 2008 and windows 7 i come to conclusion that no matter what new features have been introduced, they came with a high price: simple file and folder management tasks such as tree navigation, copy and paste operationd have become more and more dificult compared to 2000/xp.

for example, xp had that magic expanding folders in the folder tree pane by just clicking the folder name, not needing to accurately hit the so-called expando plus sign. or when you created a custom columns view and sort order, once clicking the apply button in folder options made the setting done once and for all folders, and so on.

I've looked at few alternatives such as xplorer2 or a43, but they are either immature or buggy. As I'm posting this I'm also reviewing few other, but I do not think I'll find a good alternative.

What would be ideal is explorer.exe from XP running under vista/seven.
Does anyone know if it's possible to either make the binary 2000/xp explorer.exe and it's dlls work under vista/seven OR compile the leaked windows 2000 sources to produce a working explorer.exe with associated dlls ?

I wouldn't waste time on this quest.
There are so many filemanagers available, there's bound to be one, that you like.

;) If you can't find easily 3 to 4 times as much with google, you're probably offline.

Well, if you want the old explorer and nothing but the old explorer, you'll probably have to do all the research yourself, cause i have not heared from anyone with a similar desire.
