beta testing - ad revenue sharing
#1

Testings have been made and the adsense feature has now become available to active members on boot-land.net who wish to get some revenue from their participation on the forums.
------
It is possible for each member to assign his own adsense identification on the member user profile and all the topics he has created in the past will also display the adsense code for visitors.
This might be a good way to sponsor your daily coffee or even the internet monthly costs while having some fun.
-----------------------------------------
How to setup?
First you'll need a google adsense account (free) - http://google/adsense (or login using your gmail account details)
Then you grab your pub-id that will identify your ads.
To get this id you'll need to visit the respective page:
Your adsense page --> My account --> AdSense for Content:
Copy the pub-id, here is an example:
pub-9260152184556742
Then visit your forum profile page:
http://www.boot-land...?...rCP&CODE=01
And paste the pub-id at the "Google Adsense Client Code" box.
Save and that's it.
-----------------------------
Some usage warnings
- Don't click your ads or the account will be banned by google
- Don't create numerous annoying topics on the forum or you'll soon get suspended by moderators.
- Don't encourage others to click on your ads as google will ban your account
- It's no good trying to trick the google overmind, they'll know if you're not playing fair and square.
You can however do some promotion of your work at external sites like Youtube, OSnews, other forums, etc, etc, so that more people get aware of your work and visit your promoted pages.
-----------------------------
This is all automated and the revenue will be deposited directly into your bank account using USD / EUR or any other popular currency that you prefer.
Please remember that this is still a beta functionality and I would appreciate if more people tested this feature and reported some feedback, please let me know your opinion.
Hope you enjoy this feature and good luck!

Please sign with adsense to try this out otherwise it won't be easy to tell if it's working or not.
At this moment, adsense for the topic author is only displayed on the first page. On subsequent pages (very long discussions), no adsense is displayed - this is something I'm working to solve. But on the other hand, outside visitors only visit the first page of the topic to retrieve the relevant informations.
Also, would be nice to assign this adsense revenue to members that reply on question topics - for example - the member that replies and gets a lot "thank you" would automatically be give the adsense rights if the topic author is not using adsense.
Well, a work in progress.

Please let me know where to find this field?

I've added this setting on the classic skin as well, please confirm that it is working.
If you're using the classic skin then you won't see any adsense being displayed at your topics.
Since this is meant for outside visitors, I'd recommend logging out of boot-land.net and then visiting your topics (as a guest) to see if it is working or not.
Or temporarily use the newer skin for testing this feature as the classical skin will not include adsense to allow members use this alternative skin without any publicity.

Logged members now have the option to completely remove adsense from their view.
On the left column there is an option that says "Remove publicity" just below the classical skin.
--------------
Whenever testing your adsense settings, please be sure to log out in order to view if it is working or not.

Hi Nuno,Hi, some updates.
Logged members now have the option to completely remove adsense from their view.
On the left column there is an option that says "Remove publicity" just below the classical skin.
--------------
Whenever testing your adsense settings, please be sure to log out in order to view if it is working or not.
After clicking "Remove publicity" the unwanted Centered Layout changes to Left Align
But now: How to Switch On the "Publicity" ?
There is no link supplied to do this,
but one can click Classic skin and then Undo everything with Web 2.0 skin link at the bottom of the page.
Then you get the publicity again (but also the unwanted centered layout)

There is a generic link that allows you to switch between skins, the only thing that changes are the last two digits.
Classical skin = 27
Web 2.0 with adsense = 38
Web 2.0 no publicity = 40
Here is an example link, just edit the last two digits as needed:
http://www.boot-land...?...1&skinid=27
--------
I've also had confirmation that adsense is depositing revenue on member accounts but the bug that was mentioned by wimb was removing adsense for IE users and this might have been the reason for a low performance.
Anything else needed to done/fixed?

Inside each adsense account is possible to define channels for the different sources of adsense revenue and I can add this extra setting to all members of the forum.
Then, you could edit your profile to use the same adsense account as the forum but using your own channel to ensure that your revenue is accounted separately.
Last, I think Paypal is also not an option to use so I'd proceed with a direct bank transfer to your account with the revenue as I suppose that european banks won't argue against this.
In the meanwhile I can send you a screenshot of the revenue gathered on monthly basis until it reaches a good level to support the inter-bank transfer charges.
What do you think?

How do I set it up?
You will need to go to the Edit Options area of your user control panel. Within there, you will find an option to enter your AdSense client ID (this starts with pub- and is within the HTML Google generates for you in your account) - http://www.boot-land...?...rCP&CODE=01
Please read:
as:... you will find an option to enter your AdSense client ID ...
... you will find an option to enter your AdSense client ID ONLY if you use the default skin (the new one forced upon users by the Owner of the board), no joy here for standard
or classicalskins...

I think there's some confusion going, have you visited the link using the classical skin?

I take back the "classical".
I use "IPB default", the "classical" is the "Webber" one.

Hi
I have signed up for AdSense (great idea!) so that I might get some small revenue from RMPrepUSB topic, but it seems that it is only for new topics
Can I get the link added to an already existing topic (RMPrepUSB on Project Forge)? I notice there have been over 700 downloads already and that the link to the topic is now referenced from lots of other sites, so I don't want to create a new topic...
Thanks
Steve

To check if it's working correctly or not, you should log out of the forum, visit your topic and examine the source code of the page. (on Firefox it's View --> Page Source or just Ctrl+U)
Search for the keyword
and you should be able to note if your pub-id is being used or not.google_ad_format = "728x90_as"

Yes, it is thereDon't worry, all topics you've created in the past are also using this feature, including RMPrepUSB on this case.

P.S. Does Boot Land have a 'fund' to which we can make contributions? I would feel terrible receiving all those cheques for $1000's and not giving Boot Land any of the proceeds when it is their (your) website that set it up?

There's truly no need.P.S. Does Boot Land have a 'fund' to which we can make contributions?
You can help building a good community with your knowledge and experience and that's more than enough contribution to help everyone around here.

I only browse through boot land occasionally and almost never post so likely won't benefit from the shared Adsense feature. However I think the idea of directing Adsense revenue directly to the authors is really wonderful and wanted to tell you so. Thanks!

Glad you liked it and thanks for the nice words.Hi Nuno
...
------
Some things were changed over this weekend. The ad that was placed on the bottom of the page was placed beneath the ad that was placed on top of the page and it is proving to be more effective at the moment.
The type of ad was also modified from text_images to only display images.
Members using adsense should hopefully see a better performance during this week.
