UBCD50b12 with grub4dos support is out:
http://www.ultimateb...php?p=6663#6663

Please test it and report if something doesn't work.
If memdisk floppy emulation doesn't work for you, can you write down the 'invalid opcode' that you get, and try all bootoptions of the freedos image with memdisk emulation:

0 Boot Clean
1 Boot UMBPCI (silent)
2 Boot UMBPCI (optimal)
3 Boot UMBPCI (semi-defensive)
4 Boot EMM386 (optimal)
5 Boot EMM386 (semi-defensive)
6 Boot no UMB (defensive)
7 Boot no UMB (ultra-defensive)

And report which 'invalid opcodes' you get, and which entries boot.
Then try the same when using grub4dos floppy emulation.
So that the developers of memdisk can fix this issue.

e.g.: on my PC memdisk emulation doesn't work for UMBPCI, but it works with EMM386, while grub4dos floppy emulation works in both cases.

When you use iso mapping, the following programs won't work:
  • Avira Antivirus Rescue System (fault of Avira):
    complain here: http://forum.avira.c...amp;boardID=210
  • Parted Magic and all programs that depend on Parted Magic (gparted, partimage, testdisk, photorec):
unless you rename ubcd50b12.iso to pmagic-3.8.iso

Is it a floppy image that creates bootable floppy? But nowadays we can hardly find floppy drive in PC...

@Panarchy

@Olive

Why don't you read on the home page, then test the app:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

You need the Ultimate Boot CD if you want to:

  • Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.
  • Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.
  • Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!
  • New! Run Ultimate Boot CD from your USB memory stick. A script on the CD prepares your USB memory stick so that it can be used on newer machines that supports booting from USB devices. You can access the same tools as you would from the CD version.
  • When you boot up from the CD, a text-based menu will be displayed, and you will be able to select the tool you want to run. The selected tool actually boots off a virtual floppy disk created in memory.
Tools currently included in the Ultimate Boot CD are:
...
...

And the answer is NO to both questions.

Darn!

Well thanks for clearing that up for me.

Does anyone know of a Network Boot Disc/Floppy that can mount shares contained on a DOMAIN, and run windows executables such as winnt &/or winnt32?

Thanks,

Panarchy

A more up to date list of avaible applications (will replace the main page when UBCD50 is final):
http://www.ultimateb...om/index50.html

Note: not all version numbers are up to date with the last release, but the list of included programs should be correct.

UBCD50b12 with grub4dos support is doing well and all SubMenus can be reached.

Booting the ISO loaded from HD into memory using GRUB4DOS can be realised
by using BOOT_ISO.exe of U_XP_SET package to make the HD Boot Option in GRUB4DOS menu.lst
It works very fast and allows to Boot from your NTFS Harddisk in this way
with all kind of floppy images present in the UBCD50b12 ISO loaded into RAM memory.

So DOS is still alive and UBCD50b12 makes everything very handy and useful.
You can Boot with UBCD50b12 ISO Not only from your NTFS Harddisk,
but also from your Bootable USB-stick made with Make_USB.exe ,
where in this case you have to manually adjust the preconfigured menu.lst file.

menu.lst
title Boot ubcd50b12.iso - ISO from RAM

find --set-root --ignore-floppies /ubcd50b12.iso

map --mem /ubcd50b12.iso (hd32)

map --hook

root (hd32)

chainloader (hd32)

Some options e.g. UBCD FreeDos require to use the GRUB4DOS Menu since otherwise Invalid Opcode is the result.
Therefore it is better to boot directly with the GRUB4DOS Menu
by using configfile option in GRUB4DOS menu.lst
Best results are obtained with

menu.lst
title Boot ubcd50b12.iso - GRUB4DOS Menu

find --set-root /ubcd50b12.iso

map --mem /ubcd50b12.iso (hd32)

map --hook

root (hd32)

configfile /ubcd/menus/grub4dos/main.lst

Version 4.1.1 is the last 'stable' release, but is quite old (May 10, 2007). It is a bug fix release for 4.1.0.
Version 5.00beta12 is the last 'testing' release (but it is much stabler than UBCD 4.11). It has a lot of updated programs. It contains a linux distro (Parted Magic) again like this was the case in UBCD 3.4 (INSERT). The freedos image that is used for booting many programs on UBCD, has got a hjuges update/upgrade. It is still in beta, because the file hierarchy could change a lot between the different betas, which is very annoying if you write a tutorial for including other software to UBCD. So the beta only indicates that there can be big differences between the different betas, but it doesn't say that it is tricky or risky to use.

No, but I suspect that there will be one more beta and then the final. Victor is working on it right now. It can take some weeks (months).

You have to rename ubcd50b12.iso to pmagic-3.8.iso, if you want that Parted Magic works. If you don't use iso mapping, the extracted ubcd iso will work fine.

I have not worked by ubcd befor, but i have a lot of exprements by other multiboot medias.
i have downloaded and tried to test it,but it is not what i want
because the menu is not clearly understandable, and there is no option to come back to previous
selection, when you are in one section.
the clear boot menu is essential in this kind of cd/dvd's,but this one can be understandable just
for advanced users not every one.

i am sure that this is very usful cd but because of things i said above ,i did not continue to test.

thanks

The menu is not clearly understandable, and there is no option to come back to previous selection, when you are in one section.

I don't know what you mean exactly.
If you are in the menu, you can go back to the upper lying menu, when you select the menu entry:
..
Once you have booted into a bootable entry, you can't get back to the menu without rebooting. This is because the differences in the included programs. some are linux based while others are dos based.

Can you explain a bit clearer what is not understandable about the menu?
Normally the menu should show some information about the program which entry is currently selected.

I didn't play much with it so i don't have much to say.

1) I'd remove demos unless unique/genuine.
2) I'd include 'PLoP', a must!
3) Maybe i'd include 'KExec-Loader' too but only
after its setup file conforms to DOS 8.3 naming.

PLOP was already on the list to be included :good: . I did convince Victor to add it. Normally he didn't want to add additional software to UBCD500.

I have thought about KExec-loader but is not enough maturated for the moment.

The possibility to remove "free for personal use software", will be provided by ubcdcreator (the current version doesn't allow it):

Good news!

I don't get "Invalid opcodes" with memdisk anymore :good: !

It was a simple fix. Just adding the raw parameter to memdisk. It was because of the fact that the image did work on certain PCs an not on other ones that I didn't thought about it (not mentioned in the memdisk documentation).

KERNEL /boot/syslinux/memdisk raw
APPEND initrd=/ubcd/images/fdubcd.igz

It would be great if someone who did get the invalid opcodes message, can confirm this.

So it seems that I did implement the grub4dos menu for nothing ^_^ .

Every one has now a lot of new features in grub4dos, due to my grub4dos menu support adventure for UBCD:

- help menu text support
- more advanced color command
- unmapping multiple mappings at once
- support for booting multiple initrds (are in fact: initramfs files because it only works with cpio archives)
- ability to write text strings (also hex if you want) to a file in a memory mapped image.
- a dd command
- fixed chainloading of isolinux.bin (v3.73)
- maybe some other things that I don't remember right now

A big thank you to tinybit, who made this possible.

@Icecube

Thank you for pointing me out this subject. There are indeed lot of intersting new
features in grub4dos I have to explore. For the moment I tested the memdisk and UBCD50b12
using grub4dos.

I tested with grub4dos-0.4.4-2009-03-24 version.
Results:

MEMDISK 3.73 2009-01-25
works with raw
failed without raw

title memdisk raw

find --set-root /grldr

kernel /boot/syslinux/memdisk raw

initrd /ubcd/images/fdubcd.igz

Curiously older version of memdisk works with or without raw parameter:
MEMDISK 3.71 2008-07-31
works with both raw or without raw
title memdisk

find --set-root /grldr

kernel /images/memdisk

initrd /ubcd/images/fdubcd.igz

For UBCD50b12:
Just copy the following directories from the ubcd50b12.iso to the root of your USB key:
- ubcd
- antivir (optional if Antivir not needed). This directory seeminly contains the virus signature database, so update would be easy.
- pmagic (optional if Parted Magic not needed).
Then add an entry in your menu.lst as:
title UBCD 5.0b12

find --set-root /grldr

configfile /ubcd/menus/grub4dos/main.lst
All menu options and functions do work correctly as far as I can see. My old dream now comes true :-).

Congratulations to all the people involved in the project !
