Browsing on portableapps.com I've stumbled on XAMPP, they have a 16Mb lite version and it is really handy to use.

Here are the complete details for downloading, installing and using:

unzip files

run a setup batch file (it will configure everything automatically)

and run xampp-control.exe to allow all services to start (php, apache, mySql)

The overall extracted folder weights around 100Mb but it is really valuable for using as a quick or even dedicated web server. It is really simple to use too..

After all services are running, go to a web browser and type http://localhost/ to see the results:

How can I use this at home?

If you don't have a static IP then you can use an online service for redirecting people to your IP as it changes, here's a free service that can do this task: http://www.no-ip.com...ynamic_dns.html

Use our No-IP™ Free DNS and redirection service to map a static or dynamic IP address or long URL to an easy to remember subdomain such as yourname.no-ip.com.

Really fun to try out! :P

If you don't have a static IP then you can use an online service for redirecting people to your IP as it changes, here's a free service that can do this task: <a href="http://www.no-ip.com...namic_dns.html" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.no-ip.com...namic_dns.html" target="_blank">http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/...ynamic_dns.html

Also http://www.dyndns.co...ces/dns/dyndns/.

Many routers have provisions for updating dyndns.com (and maybe others) when your IP changes. There are also small apps that run on your computer to do the same: http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/ .

I love XAMPP, I use it all the time for testing PHP locally, but I've never figured out how to get the mail server to send an email.
