....as often happens to me, I cannot find a practical use for them, but they do look nice if you have to allow/disallow access to devices over the network.

I use vnc with some frequency, but have recently began using dameware NT utilities - and it eases the handle of some network tasks, I can send net messages for all the domain or just a few machines, install and use remote control on a machine without physical acess to it, edit active directory objects, change permissions - might be worth to take a look too:

In addition to dameware (which is not free) have you also tried these?
http://www.radmin.com/products/ fast, works on LAN and Internet
http://www.twd-industries.com/ fast, works on LAN and Internet, small, portable (no installation for the client), installs remote without phisical access, etc!
They are very powerful, not free, though.

With the second one you can send a small file as an email attachment to a friend or customer who knows nothing about how to install software and ask him to double click it to have his computer enabled to be remotely assisted (no license for the server, only for the client).
The first one is the opposite: a license is required for the server and not for the client; this way while you're travelling you can remotely assist your licensed servers from any PC you have phisical access to, by quickly installing to it the free client (no license required).

I use them regularly over the Internet to assist remote computers, debug, upload files, install software, etc.
