I've created a Xubuntu 8.10 USB flash drive with Unetbootin but when I try to boot my netbook with it I get the error:
"Cannot find NTLDR"
The netbook currently has FreeDOS installed. What could be wrong?
Can't boot Xubuntu from flash

How did you partition/format the stick?
Under which OS, with which tool?
Maybe it's "NTLDR is missing"?

Stck is formatted with FAT32.
I'm not sure about the error message. I'll check back.

Stck is formatted with FAT32.
Don't want to be pickier that what I usually am , but that is the reply to the question:
With which filesystem is the partition on the stick formatted?
The question I asked was not-so-slightly different:
Which involves a lot of more infos, examples:How did you partition/format the stick?
Under which OS, with which tool?
- I used under DOS Fdisk to create a primary partition 1 Gb in size, then used from DOS FORMAT.COM to format it as FAT32, the partition is Active.
- I used under XP the HP formatting utility selecting a FAT32 filesystem for the partition, the partition is Active.
- I used under 2K Disk Manager after having installed a filter driver, created a single partition the whole size for the stick (4 Gb), then formatted it as FAT32, the partition is Active.
- I used under Vista diskpart, created a single partition on the USB stick, whole size of the stick, then formatted it as FAT32 then ran against it bootsect.exe with the /nt52 switch.
The exact text of the error message is important as it may help to understand where it comes from, BIOS, MBR, bootsector or something else.
However there are known problems with FAT32 filesystems.
Your best bet is to use fuwi's batch:
http://www.911cd.net...o...c=21702&hl=
(if you are allright with a grub4dos grldr.mbr)
Or my batches:
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=5000
The problem is somehow related to the "standard" 2K/XP/2003 bootsector invoking NTLDR for FAT32. (the DOS one invoking IO.SYS works allright)
Is there any reason why you cannot format the stick in FAT16 (size limits)?
