Well I am trying to install 7 from my USB pen-drive(4gb). I am currently using XP and I have googled on how to install it from usb; but the problem is most of them are using the diskpart method and one particular command is giving the problem(list disk) as in XP my removable disk is not shown, so I am not able to select it.

Here is the link to the guide I saw: http://garyshortblog...re-one-netbook/

The rest are almost the same so I haven't got anything to work for me.

So I just want to get windows 7 setup started from my pen-drive and I want to install it on a separate partition(dual-boot with XP). My laptop can boot from USB so that's not a problem.

Thanks for any help.

1. Format USB stick in NTFS or FAT32 with HP USB format tool
2. Copy bootmgr from Windows 7 DVD root to root of the USB stick. Rename it to ntldr.
3. Copy all other files and folders to the USB stick as they are.
That's it

Alternatively- use WinSetupFromUSB. There is no field yet for Windows 7, but the one for Vista should work just fine.

Good :)

FYI bootsect /nt60 <drive-letter> does similar job like 'rename bootmgr to ntldr' :)
Some people tend to get scared of cmd windows and the above seems an option.
It's required only when USB stick is formatted on Windows 2000/XP/2003 machine.

I tried to install Build 6801 from my HDD(SATA),
and it successed!

I mounted the iso by Daemon Tools,
then copy all files,
except autorun.inf,
to a non-system and non installation drive.
I used the second partition of my second drive,
(hd1,4) (Logical)

Then I booted (hd1,4)\BOOTMGR by boot.ini->GRLDR,
and followed the steps.

That's easy!
Not more than 20 mins,
without editing MBR/USB flash drive/etc...

Edit BOOT.INI:

[boot loader]
timeout=**
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(*)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(*)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT
C:\GRLDR="GRLDR"
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Copy GRLDR to C:\

It's also simple to use similar steps but uses GRLDR directly from USB flash drives.
