Hi Forum, Hi Amalux,

great Newcommers Tutorial, easy to reproduce (clicking some preset buttons, that's it) and gives you a good outlook for what is possible, well done Amalux! For me as a Newbee (I don't need to circumvent this phrase :huh: ) the perfekt thing to start of with.

Anyway, I've got some open questions for estimating, if this solution will fitt my needs.

But first I like to depict some observations I made yesterday night whilst testing. I forgot to switch of antivir, and during script processing it went completly mental, complaining about some virus/worm and so on actions. I understand that this Windows activationkeyreader (or whatever name is appropriate) looks like virusaction, and hence there is alarm, but the other virus complaints looked very specific. -I do not have any logs or so, because I'am at work now- Did any one of you guys encounter similar?-just need a pacifier-

Second question, I was not able to access network, is there any wifi-support implemented? -Uhh forgot, I tried the "full"-version from Amalux-

Next, could anyone of you guys name me a tutorial for (newbeefriendly) HDD-instalation. I like to use "boot-us", because of its ability to realhide the partition and not mixing stuff up like the boot.ini procedure.

And for now last, does anyone know of the prossebility of freezing a HDD-installation in its new fresh and clean state (like steadystate.msi for Windows). I would like to have a rescuesystem on my secondary HDD with the potential for reinstaling images (True image 11) form networkdrive, unhindered virusdetecion/removal from a RAID 5 and internetaccess for reading how to's. A full insurance so to say.

Thank you guys, hope to read you soon, Rovaine

Hi Rovaine :huh: ,

Firstly on behalf of myself & others on Boot-Land can I extend a very warm welcome to you at Boot-Land!

-I do not have any logs or so, because I'am at work now- Did any one of you guys encounter similar?-just need a pacifier

Answer - When working with projects of any kind within WinBuilder I switch off internet access & close down as much as possible in the task bar i.e. background services for added increase in a successful build!

Second question, I was not able to access network, is there any wifi-support implemented? -Uhh forgot, I tried the "full"-version from Amalux-

Answer - Wifi Access AFAIK is very scratchy & Hit & miss!

Next, could anyone of you guys name me a tutorial for (newbeefriendly) HDD-instalation. I like to use "boot-us", because of its ability to realhide the partition and not mixing stuff up like the boot.ini procedure.

Answer - I cannot really comment on "boot-us" but I will knock together a generic tutorial & post in the "tutorial" section, just need some time!

Answer - Other more experienced memebers will need to answer this one sorry!

All the Best,

ispy :huh:

Chears for quick answer, warm welcome and moving me here @ispy (Wales rocks, spend a year at Cardiff University :huh: )

I've read about switching all off, but I just forgott about Antivir... making me astonished to see so many alarms. So you mean, scanning the downloaded achieves is enough and I should not worry, because no one here is producing malicous scripts?

The Wifi-support would just make it more handy for me, because then I do not have to move my accesspoint around and could plug my backup-HDD in there.

A HDD-instalation tutorial would be very welcome from my side. :huh:

So, thank you for moving me closer to the light, :)

Rovaine (Hmm, quoting did not work...?...Anyway)

@ispy

Uhh, think you got me wrong. I do not need a tutorial for installing a HDD (build the machine myself), but a tutorial for putting the image in a bootable form to my second HDD. Bypasing the boot.ini method, because sometimes things get messed up by this. So I thought by my self, using boot-us with its real partition hiding might be the best solution (or a tutorial for donig better).

Sorry, for having been so imprecise, but sometimes things get messed up in english.

Hi Rovaine,

Yes, welcome! Glad you got it working and found tutorial helpful :huh: - SFX downloads are tested clean at time of posting but scan first before run offline is best policy. The only true anti-virus protection is to backup your HDD with Acronis, DriveImage, Ghost etc. first so if something gets corrupted, you have a clean restoration available. You can also use your backup images and SW to setup a new hard drive and resize partitions if wanted.

SteadyState looks interesting but I still prefer backup images for greater flexibility and reliability. I have different images setup for bare-bones testing, Vista, Linux, XP SP2, SP3, with and without WAIK etc. Under 2 min. to restore with Acronis and everything is ready to go. As stated, these images can be restored to larger or smaller partitions, different drive assignments or physical HDDs when needed, many options open. Also, the LiveXP image can be booted from CD, DVD, UFD, USB or even from a small (hidden) HDD partition if wanted for testing, restoring images etc. So many options available now :huh:

Briefly:
1) Winbuilder, like PEBuilder, has to access "parts" of the installed system or drives, and have to do so in such a way that it is very easy that an antivirus, and expecially one like antivir, very good, but if I may, a bit "etchy" is "triggered" by suspect activities.
I am afraid there is no way out for this, there is no practical way, nor boot-land has any appropriate certification or anything like that, to state without any doubt that the downloads are virus free, though I assure you that any possible precaution is used before uploading.
Even scanning "statically" the file has proved in the past to trigger false alarms, but the problem about false alarms is that until you have proof they are actually false, you need to treat them as "true alarms".
More generally, having an on-the-fly antivirus scanning engine running during build time may slow down the responsiveness of the PC, and since, though everyday bettering, Winbuilder is still a (hopefully not too) long way from release 1.0, "timing" problems may cause a "bad" build.

In other words, your mileage may vary, no strings attached, but no warranties either. :huh:

2) Try grub4dos, just start reading diddy's guide:
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=5187
you won't need to look back, EVER.

:huh:

Wow,

you guys are on the fast responding side! :)

@jaclaz:

I)

You are right, about antivir beeing a bit etchy,but reasons for using it are more nostalgia and not knowing any better.
I learned that Winbuilder is digging so deep in systemfiles, that there ist no way for a antivirus not to complain. I was just a bit nervous about antivir announcing alarmcode deep infrared. Next time I will not forget to switch all off. Sometimes nescience is better for a good sleep! :)
I know, that it is not practical for you guys to garantee non-infectious downloads and I definitely trust in you doing your best and using the appropriate precautions.

II)
Just had a quick glimse at it, and it looks like a major task for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm working on my self, getting a deeper an more in detail knowlege about my digital friend (sometimes fiend :huh: ), but I just recently screwdrived it together, and I'm realy eager to get it going. I'd like to get it going, in the (for me) right way, because of that I'm here, but besides I'm a bit impatient. Maybe I give grub4Dos a try and learn, that the Windows-clicky-all-in-one-installer-world is better for me. :) Anyway, I will give it a go.

@amalux:

I think you got me wrong. Maybe my explanation was too short or in the wrong words.

I too think that using images is the right way to keep your system clean and going, but I would like to implement a hidden LiveXp (or what suits the demanded task best) partion with my newly bought copy of True Image for system-restoration from networkHDD, antvirus- and stuff-tasks and internetaccess. For this partition (or software installed on that), I was wondering if there is any way of steadystateing it. So, that in case of emergency, everything on that HDD (no need for searching in piles of CDs) is fresh, working and not a glimps of compromised. So, what you think, is there any chance of achieving this by me, a not-yet-advanced user? :huh: Hope so!

All the best,

Rovaine

Well, lets see if I get your question right this time :huh:

You want to setup a LiveXP bootable build on a (hidden) partition on your HDD (with Acronis etc. installed) that you can boot from to restore backup images (to your other partitions) or run other maintenance tasks etc. You want this LiveXP to be 'steadystated' so it boots the same each time you need it, right? Right.

Yes! The only 'drawback' is that you will get a boot menu each time you boot the PC with the option to boot from this LiveXP partition (the LiveXP boot image is 'steadystated' by design, it can't be changed by anything you do to it while booted). There is an excellent tutorial by wimb here that will set you up with exactly what you seek. Just make sure you have a tested backup image of your current working Active partition (C:) before attempting the new setup. Acronis is excellent for this purpose and the script is already setup for you on several of the LiveXP projects here. You'll need a working LiveXP build to proceed with wimb's setup; good luck and feel free to ask questions as you go :)

Jepp :huh: , perfecly right!!!

I will give the tutorial a go, and let's see where it takes me.

With the bootmenu you are right, will have to see if it's enerving me. Maybe it's possible to put an automatic choice to 1 or 2 Seconds or so.

I'll keep you informed.

Yeah, your boot.ini will look something like this (defaults to 30 seconds)
[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

C:\btsec\RMLD1.bs="PE 1 - Boot BootSDI.img  from RAMDISK"

C:\grldr="Start GRUB4DOS Menu"
Just set timeout=1 (or 2) before loading default OS :huh:

Hi @ll,

I tried my very best last weekend to make it all going smooooth, but didn't achieve what I was longing for. I can't make acronis true image 11 working with me and my installation. Think I will give it up, and install my machine the traditional way.

Thank you @ll for trying, and maybe read you all soon, Rovaine

I'am not giving up, but first setting up my new machine the ,for me, traditional way, imaging the whole thing and then I'm ready for more. You can definitely count on me further enerving you guys (either the traditional way or some else!) :huh:

Glad to hear, ready to help anytime :)

btw, you'll note, that was my advice to you back in post#10 :huh:

Besides ensuring that you can always put things back the way they were; the (Acronis) backup image allows you to resize your existing backup to the new partition you'll create as part of the wimb tutorial. You need to break up the original C: partition into two new drives (one for the LiveXP bootable and one for the existing backup). Again, anytime you need help with this, just let me know :)
