Vixta: Linux for Windows Vista Fans
I don't know if Linus Torvalds has nightmares about Linux turning into Windows but some people definitely do. Linux Doesn't Need to Look Like Windows has been a popular and oft-visited article about Vixta on reddit since last week. It had spurred about 100 comments going back and forth about the merit of Vixta's user interface design and whether Linux should look like Windows.

However, first things first. What's Vixta? I hear you ask. Its developers describe and define its goals like so:
  • Absolutely free, in every sense.
  • ABN - Absolutely No Config.
  • User-Friendly.
  • Eye-catching.
  • Familiar look and Feel.
It's possible to say all that about Ubuntu too so why the kerfuffle? Well, Vixta copies Windows Vista's start menu and the side bar. Actually, its whole look is pretty Vista-ish. Download a copy and check it out.

I'd hate to think that such lame articles may prevent developers from creating and experimenting out of fear of being labeled copy cats and unoriginal. I applaud the three developers of Vixta and want them to know that there are people who support them and appreciate their effort.

Whether you love or hate Windows Vista, you have to admit that some of the visual elements are kind of cool. If you're in that incredibly small group of people who like the new Aero interface, with its semi-transparent windows and a sidebar with widgets (oops, I mean "gadgets") but don't want to upgrade to Vista or even use Windows at all, you might try Vixta, for Linux. It's a customized version of Fedora that looks like Windows Vista, operates similarly to Windows Vista, and even incorporates a lot of the GUI effects that you'll find only in Windows Vista.

The debate on how to best bring Linux to the masses has been raging for years. In light of our own Jen DeLeo's recent experiences with Ubuntu, it's apparent that some Linux distros, even those as highly regarded as Ubuntu, might not be ready for the mainstream. Many Linux fans are fine with that; they don't want their operating system dumbed down for people who can't Google their problems. Others believe that Linux is already easy enough to use for anyone willing to put in some effort, especially compared to older releases.

Vixta is somewhere in between. The people behind Vixta wanted the prettiness of Windows Vista, but wanted to run Linux. They also wanted to make the user interface smooth and easy enough to use that other people who may be used to Windows would appreciate it.

Where can I get it, Ans http://vixta.sourceforge.net/

If post#1 is not insulting enough to M$oft what about this from "Russia with Luv":
Looks to me they are going have too sub-contract their Legal deparment or their lawyers are going to earn their crust on this one, Super cheek really as it is shareware, 30 day trial, how possitively insulting & shear audacity of em!

http://www.linux-xp.com/ (Complete with M$oft look-a-like web-site LOL!)

M$oft will have to wait for better times to get this little lot shut down, what with frosty relations abounding currently. America V Russia.
