I am building and using the project LiveXP lx40308ln on two Gateway computers, a 500s and a 500x.

The 500s and 500x both use the same motherboard, an Intel RG84510A. The 500s uses the built-in Intel Integrated Video, while the 500x uses an add-in nVidia GeForce 4 MX440 GR card (the internal Intel integrated video is disabled in BIOS).

The CD I make from lx40308ln runs on either computer, however the video resolution on the 500s is set to 640x480 and only 4 bit color! On that very same computer I run kubuntu and WinXP at 1024x768 24-bit color and 1280x1024 24-bit color. So the computer is capable of much better than what LiveXP is giving me.

I read the "Out of range error from monitor" topic (http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=5309) but my problem seems to be different, so that's why I'm not cluttering up that topic.

I cannot find the output file '%temp%\SetResolution.log' that galapo refers to in that topic, and haven't been able to make much progress.

I did try Lancelot's suggestion

in Basic->Tweaks->Display Properties choose 800x600 (which is default)

in Basic->Tweaks->SetResolution ;
uncheck "default to highest supported res" if selected.
and "Resolution for native machines" choose "1024x768"

but I still got only 4-bit 640x480 on the real boot.

I would appreciate some suggestions.

Thanks!

I just came across the topic "The 8 Colors of LiveXP???" (http://www.boot-land...opic=2348&st=20) and was reading about the lack of RAM causing LiveXP to fall back to low-resolution and low-color.

The Intel Integrated Video grabs some of the system RAM, of course, and the RAMdrive is taking a bunch, so maybe that's what is causing the problem.

The BIOS is very plain-Jane and does not have anything for video settings beyond telling the system whether to preferentially use PCI or AGP video in place of the built-in video.

How do I find out how much memory is available to the built-in video?

Thanks!

Nevermind.

I found a spare video card that I could put into the computer, so now it isn't using shared memory for the video.

And that took care of the resolution problem -- I am now happily running 1280x1024 with 16-bit color, which is more than adequate.
