Thank you Wanko for your unnecessarily abusive and completely unhelpful contribution, but for those more interested in getting working solutions than in reading tiresome repetition of forum rules, here is how you get the Puppy Linux iso booting and running properly from Grub4DOS.

Start by booting the Puppy CD, do some customisation and shut down, accepting the save option. Reboot from the CD and from the Puppy Setup menu select Remaster Puppy Live-CD, accepting all the default options to create an ISO. Copy the ISO (named custom-puppy.iso) to wherever you keep your bootable ISOs for Grub4DOS, here /ISO.

Now add something like this to your menu.lst file -

title Puppy Linux 5.20 Live CD

find --set-root /ISO/custom-puppy.iso

map /ISO/custom-puppy.iso (0xff)

map --hook

root (0xff)

kernel /vmlinuz splash

initrd /initrd.gz

boot

Remove the Puppy CD and reboot. It should now boot to your customised version of Puppy though you may get a message about the lupusave.2fs file needing to be contiguous, in which case boot to something else and defrag the partition first before trying again.

You are very welcome :), now what in your opinion should a Moderator do on the Forum it was given to him to moderate if not tiresomely repeat the forum rules and remind users common sense and netiquette? :)

And yes, this is another rhetorical question, I know what I could do, and you are very lucky that I won't do it.

Can someone clarify, is there any difference in booting an ISO from memory as opposed to booting it directly from a disk in terms of hard drive availability for service opps after the ISO boot? Is it possible to format or physically remove a drive after booting an ISO directly from it without affecting the ISO programs work? Why exactly?

If hooks remain in "direct ISO from HD boot" scenario, would a defrag or repartitioning program started from the ISO work faster depending on whether the ISO was booted from memory or HD? Remember though, such programs are generally designed to work even when started from Windows, but usually slower compare to booting from a dedicated CD.

P.S. Reposted elsewhere.

Can you read? :yahoo:
Have you read this thread title?

grub4dos, .iso images and (hd32) or (0xFF) mapping
Post here ONLY reports of working setups!

Have you read it's first post?
http://reboot.pro/5041/

This thread is reserved for people reporting their success using newish releases of grub4dos that allow for direct booting to a .iso imaging through mappig the ISO image to (hd32).

Ideally, any user who had some success with this way of booting can post here reporting what he succeeded with and how he did it, links to other boards, tutorials guides related to the matter are also welcome.

PLEASE NO request for help here, post them in the grub4dos forum.

PLEASE NO "Nice, thank you!" kind of posts.

PLEASE NO "Ha, this is not useful!" type of comments.

This thread should become simply a list of working setups, no more, no less.

Thanks for cooperation.

Or it's just a new way to communicate and contribute to the increase of entropy?

Hi Wonko,

I was looking for a suitable thread, and the impression was this is the right place to clarify the difference btw mem and disk G4D ops - to facilitate increase in working setups. However, I can place same question in another existing thread (suggest which one), start a new thread (suggest title) or read an old thread highlighting same info (suggest link). Also, may be a mod can move my post to a corresponding thread - appreciated!

As soon as you'll take a constructive approach, we'll hopefully move forward towards getting this question clarified to the benefit of all. :yahoo:

Btw, asking if a written post author can read is not the best way to demonstrate one's intelligence...

Pretty straightforward menu section for WinPE 3.1 64-bit, prepared according to updated to Win 7 SP1 MS Instructions:

title Boot WinPE 3.1 64-bit
find --set-root --ignore-floppies /ISO/winpe_amd64.iso
map /ISO/winpe_amd64.iso (hd32)
map --hook
root (hd32)
chainloader ()

It works pretty well, if you hit Enter fast enough, when asked on screen whether you want to boot from CD... Otherwise the system reverts back to booting from your HD. :photo:

Try replacing
chainloader ()
with
chainloader /bootmgr || chainloader /BOOTMGR

Yep, this option boots straight:

map /ISO/winpe_amd64.iso (hd32)
map --hook

hi everyone,
im new to this forum. also, im not used to post, and my native language is spanish. so, ill try to do this
as clear as posible to me.

i have a 16gb flash drive, kingston DT108, so tiny, i always bring it with me on my keychain.
i have put on it a variety of tools, and i like to share my working "menu.lst". almost all content found in various forums over the internet, i just compiled the working and interesting to me. some others created by tools like unetbootin, multibootiso or universal-usb-installer. and a few with trial and error. and i dont remember where found or what programs created what.

first, ill list the content of the drive.

-------------------------
there are some other changes: to boot backtrack 4 and list the backtrack-boot-menu, i had to change the
content of [boot-bt4r1][grub]menu.lst, replacing all text "boot" for "boot-bt4r1" and in [boot-
oph][grub]menu.lst the same.
i hope this helps. enjoy it.

i am still getting the same error in the latest version . i am using the default iso name

Here is the entry

title Parted Magic 6.7
find --set-root /_iso/pmagic_2011_12_30.iso
map --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0 /_iso/pmagic_2011_12_30.iso (hd32)
map --hook
root (hd32)
chainloader (hd32)

EDIT : IT SEEMS PARTED MAGIC WILL WORK ONLY IF the iso is in root of the pendrive

I tried ip=frommedia findiso=/_iso/pmagic_2011_12_30.iso - and it worked (once) , but then I removed the ip=frommedia bit to see if it was needed and it stopped working and now I can't get it to work at all again even when I put it back :dubbio:!!!
