How to install and run Wine

Add the WineHQ APT Repository:

wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following to your sources.list

deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt *codename* main

deb-src http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt *codename* main

replace *codename* with your version: breezy, dapper, edgy,
etch, feisty, gutsy, hardy

apt-get update

apt-get install wine

Note specifically that you can set the directory you wish to use as the "C:" drive for Wine. By default, this is /home/USER/.wine/drive_c but you can set it to any directory you wish, including a pre-existing Windows directory on your computer. However, changing the default directory may cause some problems with Wine and is not recommended.

You can set a link to your home folder for the Wine "C:" drive to make it easier to find:

ln -s ~/.wine/drive_c ~/drive_c

Install latest WinRAR beta version

wget http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar38b1.exe

wine wrar38b1.exe

Install Internet Explorer 6 for Wine:

wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz

tar zxvf ies4linux-latest.tar.gz

cd ies4linux-*

Accept all the defaults for installation.
