I have looked around and nobody seems to have sound running. It seems that at one time it worked on BartPE but has since fizzeled. VPE V.12 has all the files needed to support sound but the windows audio services is missing. I know is it run by svchost.exe in system32. I have tried to start it but it will not activate. Does anyone know why?

Surely someone has worked on this and is close to a solution...

I also would like some sound support. I have tried to make a RealTek HD audio plugin in VistaPE with script. No prize yet. My goal: boot from a DVD and run a fully TrueCrypt encrypted system with all portable apps. All works now except sound!

Definiatly want to know about the trucrypt stuff later...as for the sound...

I know svhost is used to run the sound. I created a service using instsrv.exe (from win2003) since I could not get the vista sc.exe to work. I sucessfully created the service but when I start it it trys to start and hangs up in a starting mode. I know I am close, but no cigar. The command may have changed. In XP the the service command was C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs netsvcs so I used X:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. The dependency services, RPC and Plug and Play are running already by default in PE.

I plan to load a full version of Vista and check the sound services and it's dependencies against PE including the registry instead of XP as I have been doing. If we can get the service to run, we should be able to load any sound card driver and have sound...

Somebody flag me if what I am doing or have done thus far sounds wrong.

That is a good idea...printing as well. I guess ultimatly this thread will be about enabling services we wish worked, sound, printing, etc.

I will look into it.

I got the spooler to install and actually started the service. But I could not get a local printer to install. Maybe you will have better luck.

Make sure you install MMC on your PE build, it makes it easier to work with.

Get a copy of instsrv.exe. Google it, you can download it from somewhere.
Copy the following files from system32 folder of a vista installation or disc to your PE system32 folder:
ntprint.dll
ntprint.exe
spoolss.dll
spoolsv.exe

Open command prompt in PE and type:

instsrv "Print Spooler" x:\windows\system32\spoolsv.exe

Press enter...done.

Open MMC and click file, then add remove snap-in. Add the services snap in.

Go to the print spooler service and right-click, start.

You should also be able to start the service command line, but SC from the vista disc does not seem to work.

Hopefully someone will be able to take what I have done and expand. I can get PE to see the printer, and even see the driver, but it fails everytime it goes to install the driver (yes they are VISTA drivers). This is the same problem I had with the sound card, except I was able to make the Print Spooler service start.

Hello,

I got also the spooler service to install and actually started the service. But I could not get a local printer to install.( See Error)
I have also test the Network connection service and actually i started the service

Let us can look for us together a solution to integrate spooler service and more directly in the VistaPE project. (A service creation is available in VistaPE Patch v3d; http://maxrealqnx.boot-land.net/;)

spooler.JPG

I have find the error in http://msdn.microsof...y/aa505946.aspx
0x000006BE
RPC_S_CALL_FAILED

The remote procedure call failed. Implies the server was reachable at a certain point in time, and execution of the remote procedure call on the server might have started.
Sorry but i have forget a site for Vista service : http://www.blackviper.com/

I then load the driver for the system after I am booted in to PE using drvload.exe G:\Drivers\Audio\HDACPC.inf

So far the driver loads correctly and I can start Vlc player and play an MP3 but I do not get any audio output. Anyone have any other ideas to help this along?

...............

So help me understand something here...you loaded the driver, but where in the registry changes did you load the audio service for Vista. I was under the impression that this was under svhost.

Also, I can not import the registy files you posted, it may just be me.

Lastly, I used drvload.exe to install my sound driver, but it just shows up under unknown devices now and still says the drvice driver may be corrupted or missing. Though this may be because I did not import your reg files yet.

So first the registry files... Open regedit and then select/highlight the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive. The go to the top menu and select File-> Load Hive-> Navigate to the directory where your PE Registry hives are located. On my machine it is "C:\PE\winpe_x86\mount\Windows\System32\config\System" or Software, Default etc. Then after selecting the Registry file to load then name it according to this methodology... EXTERNALSYSTEM, EXTERNALSOFTWARE, EXTERNALDEFAULT

I do this so it is obvious as to which is not a hive of the current operating system.

Second...

As far as it being svchost for the audio services you are correct it is. However when registry hives are exported or imported the location or path of an object is frequently done in HEX. Where "ImagePath" is in the registry keys I posted is the location of the file and the command to be launched. If you translate the HEX it would say "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted".

As for DRVLOAD.EXE if you use Unknown Devices by Halfdone you can see if the driver loaded correctly. If it did not and is showing up with problems or as missing then you probably did not provide the correct driver/inf to DRVLOAD. Make sure you are loading a Vista compatible driver or it will likely fail to function correctly.

@ludovici
I noticed with your lists of files from the winsxs that you are including the speech files. This is something I did not do but probably should have done in the process of elimination. I will try it again and see what results I can come up with.
