@All

Version 2.0.0 ready for download.

Sereval bug fixes

Version 1.1.3 ready for download.
Changes:
  • fixed bug which sometimes brought "access violation"
Version 1.1.2 ready for download.
Changes:
  • fixed bug with compressed directories
Version 1.1.1 ready for download.
Changes:
  • Correction of UC / LC when comparing Folder and File names
Version 1.1.0 ready for download.
Changes:
  • Backup option as suggested by MichaelZ
  • Some logical checks to prohibit 'garbage download'
  • Addition of 'Shared Servers'
  • App Scripts
  • Tools
[/list]

As a final goal, this should make the current App Scripts and Tools in the different servers obsolete. There should be only one place to download from.

Download

Primary post:

Currently I'm working on a WinBuilder Download Manager which is more powerful than the current builtin one.

As everybody knows, adding 'just a simple feature' sometimes demands a complete redesign.

Therefore I herewith publish the current state and ask for enhancement / change suggestions.

Some features:
  • Copy files to a different project
  • Save options: After download of new versions you do not have to check whether some script options are changed
  • When downloading 'cross project' the execute levels are corrected
  • ... your suggestions
It makes possible:
  • To have 'App Scripts' on a central server, e.g. shared.winbuilder.net
  • To have 'Tools' on the above server
  • To have selected 'Drivers' on the above server
  • To 'make invisible' all above scripts on the 'not-above' servers
What's needed:
  • Nothing else
    Help File

And here a first impression of the tool, to help you for suggestions / critics etc.

Hi Peter,

I also support the idea of starting to interact several servers altogether - this is good stuff.

Will test soon!

Hmmm. Yes, indeed. That's very true.

Looks very interesting, Peter. I've kinda been expecting your feedback on our PM discussion re possible follow-ups to the "Browser" project. But that's okay. They say that "two heads are always better than one" and, since you've apparently got your own new idea in the works, I guess i might as well post my prototype DBMS idea for open discussion here as well. Between the two of us, we may actually generate some broader interest in "radical change", if we don't get "shot down in flames" first.

To be complete, here the PMs with Arvy:

Peter

Hi Peter,

A few days ago, at some point (forget exactly when) during the discussion of the PHP site managmemt project that I did for Nuno Brito, you asked about the possibility of my doing something more along the lines that I would have preferred myself -- unrestricted by narrow design consraints and using a data management concept that could tie together the entire community's output.

At the moment, I don't really feel like entering into another full-scale "WB project" undertaking and the kind of "interactions" that would entail. But I have been playing around a little during quiet moments on my own just to see what may be possible. Since you expressed an interest, I thought you might want to follow the developments from time to time. If so, you can observe what I'm doing as a "work in progress" at http://virtech.org/w...der/WBDatabase/ if you wish.

I don't intend making any "public announcement" about it myself, but, on the other hand, it's not a "secret" and I don't care if you want to make it known to others. It's entirely up to you. Just understand that it's really nothing more that a prototype at this stage and I'm not inviting and won't be responding to anybody's comments about it. It's just a "toy" that I'm playing with in my spare time. Right now, it doesn't actually do anything (currently just a prototype interface with no content) and it will probably sit idle for long periods when I'll be engaged in other activities.

I just thought that, in view of your earlier questions, you might be interested in watching me play with it from time to time. :tabletalk:

Best regards,
Richard Virtue ("Arvy")

Hi Richard,

thanks for your offer, and I'm glad to accept.

Currently I'm already working on a -complete client site- program which works with all external WB servers and lets download files #cross projects'.
Maybe I wait a bit with that and watch your activities.

Peter

Hey, that sounds interesting. You should go right ahead with anything you are working on. Basically, I'm just playing around whenever I have a little spare time with nothing better to do. As I think I said to you during our "online" chit chat, I think PHP is a lot of fun, especially when bad whether keeps me indoors.

Actually, this prototype of mine is progessing much more quicly than I expected. I to looks like I'll have a version up that really "works" (i.e., one that actually updates the database by reading the files info from any registered client machine) some time later today or tomorrow. I've got it running on my "localhost" platform now, but it's still too full of buggy quirks to install on the server. I'll let you know when it is up so you can play around with it if you wish.

I left the administrator's login as username "admin" password "admin" so that you can get into that part of it whenever you want to. Don't worry about messing anything up. At this stage, it's only a "toy" anyhow. Have fun with it.

TTYL,
Richard

Actually, I send you another after that. Maybe you didn't get it.

Hi Peter.

This is just to let you know that things are continuing to progress as we've discussed previously.

Some time ago, during our earlier discussions, you asked about possibilities for managing the client interface more easily and, in reply, I think I made a humourous comment about editing the config file with UltraEdit-32, or something like that. Anyhow, the "prototype" (v0.04) now includes something that might appeal to you in that respect. Next time you visit the test installation,
you might want to note the « Modify Winbuilder Client Preferences » link at the bottom of the admin page -- a mere forerunner of some possibilities that I have in mind.

Best regards,
Richard Virtue ("Arvy")

You seem just a trifle defensive. I hope you didn't think I was being accusatory or anything remotely like that. I was aware, of course, that you were also looking into possibilities of your own and, as I think I indicated, that's great as far as I'm concerned. I was just kinda expecting some preliminary feedback from you on my earliest WB-DBMS prototype work and thought we might even "pool" some ideas along the way. As I said, "two heads are always better than one". But it's no big deal either way. Independent thought is good too.

Richard!

Do not worry. I'm really not defensive (not even a bit) in this topic.

But the task I started currently uses nearly all of my ressources. You see (or miss) my other posts here.
Currently I'm spending a 24+ hours day in the new downloadEx.exe.

To give an image of the current stage:
Attached File  downloadEx.zip   244.43KB   606 downloads
Unzip into %Basedir%
You can define your own web servers by creating a file downloadEX.ini containing
[Main]WebServer=livexp.boot-land.net,nativeex.boot-land.net,psc.boot-land.net, ....

Hi Peter  ,

One very "picky" detail or observation.

The attached screenshot to your downloader under the heading "Select" reads:
  • Minimum
  • Recommended
  • Ccmplete
  • Beta
Should "Ccmplete" really be Complete.

Regards,

ispy :tabletalk:

P.S. Re post #9 Rather than clutter this posting with another post, just as a way of Acknowledgement that the problem in respect of "Complete" must be at my end "How very odd" Mucho regards ispy

Hi Peter,

I have a feature suggestion for your Download Manager. Would it be possible to rename a script to script-name.script.bak before it is overwritten by a new version? Having this feature one could use ones favorite diff and merge utility to bring back ones own modifications.

Many Greetings
MichaelZ

Sorry, in the beta version you must add your server to downloadEx.ini manually.

And it must be a valid WinBuilder server, that means contain an actual updates.ini.

I was asking about the project folders in the left panel. All it is showing is %BaseDir%\Projects.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. I thought that you tried with a new empty folder.

downloadEx recognizes as WinBuilder projects:
Subdirs of %basedir%\projects which contain a valid script.project file. The information shown in the left tree is taken from this / these script.project.

Please check:

If you have WinBuilder.exe in the same folder as downloadEx.exe: If WinBuilder shows a tree, but downloadEx does not, there is something wrong with downloadEx. In this case, please post the script.project files.

Thanks, Paraglider.

There has been an issue with the 'Compressed' file attribute.

Fixed.

BTW: If your E:\ZIP\WinBuilder is not compressed, give alarm here.

That's what I meant with

...
But because there has been no remarkable interest, I put the project into hibernating.
And I'm rather sure that the app did not get to know latest development.

If you now download and test it propably will crash or fail due to the changes made to updates.ini
