Hi

Am playing with beta12 of vistape and before this version I always used to use BCDW and had a nice menu listing vistape, several dos utils as .ima files and a couple of .iso files and it worked like a dream

Bit confused now we have lost BCDW and seem to only have grub4dos - how do I add ima and iso files to the menu.lst

Searched for ages to find correct way of doing it without success, so help!!! please?

You searched for ages where? :)

Just a few threads below this in the forum:
http://www.boot-land...ub4dos-f66.html
http://www.boot-land...mine-t3963.html
(for .ima images)

And just browse the forum:

amd search more accurately elsewhere :(:

(for .iso images)

thanks for this, I had read some of these but hoped there would be an easier way with ima/img files like with bcdw, it seems I have to fiddle about changing things, using gzip etc to get them to work?

Also tried iso and added this line to menu.lst

title iso boot test
map (hd0,0)/dban.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
boot

copied over dban.iso to root of CD, but when I then boot and choose the option I get error 17:file not found.

What am I missing, am I putting the iso file in the wrong place on the CD?

Thanks jaclaz

@darren rose

You need to learn some basics, first thing.

The idea of having a customizable menu.lst is to customize it, so you certainly need to fiddle with things, gzip as clearly stated is NOT a necessity, but rather an option.

title iso boot test
map (hd0,0)/dban.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
boot

copied over dban.iso to root of CD, but when I then boot and choose the option I get error 17:file not found.

What am I missing, am I putting the iso file in the wrong place on the CD?

(bolding is mine)

(hd0,0) means first partition - ,0 - of first Hard Drive - hd0 - sure grub4dos cannot find the file on the CD-ROM, since it does not look for it THERE, CD-ROM, should be (cd).

The forum is full of examples and explanations, it would be appreciated if you take some time to read and understand what has ALREADY been written, before whining that something you just copied and pasted does not work.

Maybe I appear rude, or at least ruder than what I usually am :), but really, using (hd0,0) for booting from a CD-ROM is very like posting "my PC does not boot" without first checking if there is power on the mains.

okay fair point, just thought the point of forum was to ask for help! hence what I usually do and have had some "helpful" replies

As stated I am used to using bcdw which is so easier, just add entry pointing to file and it all worked fine every time!, grub seems more complicated and as I am in a hurry trying to get a CD done for a customer I needed some help, hence why I asked, all I needed to know was how to add an ima/img file and how to add an iso, a simple bit of info would of helped me.

But don't worry I'll spend the rest of my sunday reading up 100's of posts and find my answer hopefully

NO, that is the initial misunderstanding.

Forums are here because this is a Community, where people learn something new and exchange ideas, info and opinions, about this hobby of members, when a member of the Community asks for help, usually it is a priority for other members to try and help him, but this is not:
1) a help desk
2) a FREE consulting firm

Knowing that you need this "in a hurry" as you are "trying to get a CD done for a customer" makes me actually repent of having given you the (small) help I did.

I do consulting for a flat hour fee, you can hire me (and pay me for the time I use in solving your problem) or you can find your way.

Making me (or anyone else) do your homework instead of yourself is simply not fair.

Well, you were given the info you asked, sorry if you were not able to use them properly.

have been reading a lot of them, but a lot refer to booting from usb (I am booting from CD) and none really seem to explain the syntax of the menu

does grub4dos have a manual anywhere you know of?

No, that is one of the problems, grub4dos is a "live" thing, VERY experimental, it is updated, bettered and improved on a monthly or weekly basis, so the only info comes from it's readme.txt and from posts around, that I try to keep as together as possible here on boot-land, cross-linking to the 911CD ones as well.

The basic syntax is of course the same as that of legacy Grub, but the features missing in grub and only present in grub4dos can only be found from the said sources.

There is a basic guide here:
http://grub4dos.sour...ub4dos_tutorial
http://www.boot-land...rial-t3535.html
but it's not updated, for example it still uses the cdrom --init / (cd0) way, which is not needed on most IDE based motherboards.

The good thing with grub4dos is that you can use it in interactive mode, using the "c" command, this way, once you have grabbed the basic syntax, you can experiment.

Read these, where some examples of command based approach are documented:

Have you noticed that there is a readme file included with every Grub4DOS release? From README_GRUB4DOS.txt- Grub4Dos 0.4.3 2008-01-03:

...Here are some
examples showing the usage of disk emulation commands:
.....

******************************************************************************
*** The New `cdrom' Command Syntax ***
******************************************************************************
....

******************************************************************************
*** The CDROM emulation (virtualization) ***
******************************************************************************
......

BTW blaming Jaclaz that is not being helpful is very untrue :(, you should read his numerous posts here, at msfn.org, 911cd.net and so on and change your mind.
Do your homework, if you have any questions after that, sure you will get help :)

If you have looked at the links he gave you calmly, you would have found this too, it's located on the same page where your thread is:
Grub4Dos Tutorial, and pretty much answers your question.

I used the same WinBuilder version (074) and Vistpe version(12 beta) to build my Vista PE. Then I tried to add Acronis 11 and ERD commander 2005 ISO. All failed. Here is the setup for ERD commander 2005.

title ERD Commander 2005
find --set-root /iso/erd2005.iso
map -mem /iso/erd2005.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
boot

Error message:
(cd)
Filesystem type is iso9660, using whole disk
map -mem /iso/erd2005.iso (hd32)

Error 12: Unrecognized device string

Press any key to continue ...

I have read the basic document and all the threads mentioned in this posts. Still no clue. Anybody can help? Thanks in advance.

map -mem /iso/erd2005.iso (hd32)

Syntax error. It should be

map --mem /iso/erd2005.iso (hd32)

@darren rose

besides the missing "-" minus sign, you actually failed to actually read the given links:
http://www.911cd.net...o...=20468&st=9
and from there this one:
http://www.boot-land...?...=3287&st=50
or, to be more exact this post:
http://www.boot-land...?...=3287&st=52

Since ERD2005 is a NT based image, it won't work, unless you use a RAMDISK approach.
