[How To] Create a bootable and generic XP Embedded Image.

1. Download the XP Embedded trial. (You don't have to register)
http://www.microsoft...;DisplayLang=en

2. Install these tools in the following order.

Tools Setup
Database Engine Setup
Database Setup
Remote Boot Setup

The product key is in %ProgramFiles%\Windows Embedded\Installer\DISK1\productkey.txt

3. Install XPe SP2 (OPTIONAL)

4. Run Target Designer.

5. Create a new platform by using the file menu or toolbar.

6. In the component database window, drag and drop a base macro.

Software

  Test & Development

	 Winlogon Sample Macro

	 Minlogon Sample Macro

	 MinKernel Sample Macro
7. Check your dependencies.

8. Go to the Base Component Settings

9. Enter your ARC path, disk size and cluster size values.

10. Add the Plug and Play BIOS Component and the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

11. If you are using the Winlogon sample macro, goto the User Interface Core component's settings and select the settings that are appropriate for your configuration.

12. Check dependencies

13. Build Image.

14. Transfer Image to target device.

15. If it bluescreens you have done something wrong. (Please send the configuration to me. slx file)

16. Let FBA run.

Followed this little guide without knowing much about XPe. Only got confused on a few points.

* I couldn't find "Base Device Settings" - the closest I could find is "Target Device Settings"

* I found the ARC path fields but I have no idea what "ARC" means :thumbsup: I changed the Boot Partition Size field to 512 as I may try to fit this on a CD someday. My hunch, however, is that I should have put in the values for the hard drive this build of XPE will run from.. dunno!

* I built an image and it seemed to put an XPE O

Target Device Settings

That is what I meant.

* I built an image and it seemed to put an XPE OS install in the "C:\Windows Embedded Images" folder.
I assume the next step is to copy those files onto a freshly formatted hard drive and see if it boots?
