Hi, new forum member here.

I have been enjoying VistaPE recently but have been unable to solve this problem, so I came here looking for help. When I boot a CD version of VistaPE on a PC that uses an IDE CD drive, it works perfectly. If instead I try booting it on a PC that uses a USB CD drive then I get the error shown in the attached picture.

Error.jpg

I also put the build on a USB flash drive and it does the same thing when booting on any PC. When the command prompt window for vpeinit.exe first appears on the screen the "Searching disk with programs ... not found. Trying start "wpeinit.exe" and searching again..." message appears and then there is a 2-minute delay before anything happens. After the two-minute delay, the rest of the load process completes without further error and everything works fine.

I've tried both the CD and the USB flash drive builds on a number of PCs and the common factor seems to be related to USB. If VistaPE is booted from a USB flash drive or a USB CD-ROM then the error and the long delay occurs. If booted from an IDE CD or DVD drive then there is no error nor is there a long delay.

Here are two posts that I found that describe the same problem:
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=2753
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=2447

I have tried the suggestions listed in the two posts -- I do have the 0-byte file "vistape.cd" in the root of the flash drive directory and I have built VistaPE to run entirely from RAM with all programs in the boot.wim file, but I still see the error.

The build was done using WinBuilder 0.72a with a Vista DVD for the source and using the downloads at vistape.net/project for VistaPE 010, and I have tried everything from a very minimal build to a complete build using the beta downloads, and it works except for this error and the resultant 2-minute delay. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I can boot VistaPE without problem my USB keys using the same version of wpeinit.
1) Please post here the output of dir command (dir x:\) where x: is your USB drive letter.
2) I assume you have both x:\vistape.cd file and x:\programs directory.

I did not have the \Programs directory at first; it was not included in the build, so I added it as shown.

When I first read your reply I thought "that makes sense; this should be a simple fix". But unfortunately, it did not work. I still get the error message and the 2-minute delay.

The message is "Searching disk with programs not found... etc..;".
This means vpeldr/wpeinit is trying to search for \Programs directory on all disks.
This means you must have somewhere a disk with vistape.cd file and a full programs directory on that disk as expected by wpeinit.
If this does not work, I suspect that your programs directory is empty ? Or is it completely identical (size, number of files...) to the
Programs directory on the CD ?

Yes, the programs directory is empty because I built VistaPE with all programs in boot.wim. When WinBuilder finished, there was no programs directory on the CD. Also, I tried a build that contained several programs, and there was a \programs folder in the final CD image, and the same problem with the vpeldr error happened.

When I saw your first post above I added an empty \programs directory to the flash drive myself, but it didn't change the vpeldr error message. Just now I tried putting a copy of the vistape.cd file into the \programs folder so that there was something in the folder, but that didn't work either.

Remember, the CD build without any \programs folder works fine when booted from an IDE CD or DVD drive. It produces the error message when booted from a USB CD drive. I am thinking this is a hardware detection issue with USB. Maybe some USB chips are detected correctly, like yours apparently is, but others like mine are not?

Thank you for your suggestions; I appreciate the willingness to help out. A friend and I are going to exchange builds. His build works on his PCs with IDE and USB optical drives, but shows the vpeldr error when booting from a USB flash drive. My build shows the vpeldr error when booting from anything USB. That will give us some more data points.

Thanks for sharing your test results - this is important to understand what can be made to fix this issue.

@K0LO

Maybe you can try another method used by me (post #17) at this thread:

VistaPE 011 not mount "Programs" folder (by default) and not search for "vistape.cd" (by default, it requested only for mounting "Programs" folder) and boot a little faster, try it

Using VistaPE 011 eliminated the error messages that I was seeing when booting from USB devices. In fact, it is faster than VistaPE 010. On my machine with a 280 MB VistaPE build, booting from a USB flash drive takes 15 seconds to finish the bootmgr process (Loading Files), and then another 30 seconds to finish the vpeldr process and end up at the shell. This is much better; thank you for the suggestion.

Now there appear to be a few bugs with 011, and I need to figure out how to get some of the applications that were available in 010 to run, but at least this gets me started.

many bugs are fixed and i plan upload new build for 011 version in one or two days, all program will be uploaded too, and now vpeldr run hwpnp during boot time for detecting USB devices, it take ~15-30 seconds, but we have all disks and all programs
