I have no idea why there's not a winnt.exe in the i386 folder. In situations without a floppy or CD I usually:

1. Take the laptop HDD to a working PC.
2. Format the laptop drive FAT32
3. Copy the i386 folder from a XP disc to the laptop HDD.
4. Use a Win 98 boot disk to SYS the laptop HDD (so it can boot to DOS)
5. Mount the HDD back into the laptop.
6. Boot to DOS
7. CD over to the i386 folder and execute WINNT

Or use another XP-box - plugin the notebook hd and call winnt32 with /syspart and /makelocalsource parameter.
Then you can directly use ntfs and don't need to fiddle with dos first.

Do you have the SP2 only?
Or a CD with complete XP Sp2?

What about using an USB stick?

Problem appears to be not the "media", but rather "data" on the media (actually missing from it).

I have seen "OEM" CD's missing WINNT.EXE.

Can you please post details about the "source" CD, i.e. the one from which you copied the files to HD?

its one of those WinXP sp2 and windows updates included CD. its an unattended Windows installation CD that installs SP2 with some updates. :loleverybody:
because its unattended installation i think just running winnt.exe isnt enough.

what i did i partitioned laptop HDD and copied CD files to one partition and formated the other partition Format C: /s so that its bootable. i got winnnt.exe of a friend and copied it over to i386 folder and run it.
however installation stops with missing EULA agreement and quits.

theoretically what i think is that setup files are executed from the boot image.... but how to go around this i dont know?? :w00t: :w00t:
