devio proxy [as imDisk] for Linux (or better way???)

Hi PPL...

I want have a remote provider for a block-device (disk) in a linux box

(thinking of usind devio... running on the remote machine)

and have a proxy (like imDisk) in the local machine

(providing a block-device device id /sd*)

anybody knows of a imDisk-for-Linux...

or a better method perhaps using native Linux tooling

TIA, ZEE

Would something like SSHFS/FUSE do?

Yes.. it is an excellent solution to 'remote' a filesystem...

but I want to take control of the remote drive at low level...

so I can delete/create partitions for example...

Thanks... ;-)

Well but you CANNOT do that with IMDISK anyway. :dubbio:

So - even on windows - you need to connect *something else* to devio.

A past reference (if the Arsenal Image driver is used the "accessed device" can be partitioned, but not of course with IMDISK)

Yes, You're right,,,,

to take control at low-level even with imDisk as proxy it is not possible...

I'm seachin for a solution for Windows and Linux,,,

Do you know of a 'client' or proxy to consume the devio service

that provides raw access to the remote drive ?

Ideally for Windows and Linux...

but if there are some for other OS(s) they are welcome!

Between Linux machines and Windows Server editions I personally like to use iSCSI. There are lots of how-tos etc about iSCSI between Linux machines.

Creating an iSCSI target is however not natively supported in Windows client editions so you would need some third-party solution in that case. It is possible to create an iSCSI initiator and connect to an iSCSI target in Windows client editions though.

Yep :) , more or less only ISCSI and AOE can do that, just in case:

Yep... I sometimes use iscsi when I have a windows 2012 and 2016 in the network... :merc:

do you know of any good iscsi server to install in windows 7 or 10 ?  :lightbulb:

open source preferably... :yahoo:

Thx for your thoughts... :book:

I already used AOE a few years back... :D

but I can never put it to work with Windows 7 x64 ou Windows Server 2012... :juggler:

It is a pity,,, because it uses OSI/L2... and in a LAN it is lighter and fast than iscsi (OSI/L3)

and it is a pain to find information/documentation... not to mention updates... -_-

I scsi is what i'm using now (with ipxe),,, but i crave for a light/small/simpler solution,,,

just as the one i exposed...

Thx man.. you are always very informative!!! :hypocrite:

Misty has listed some windows iscsi targets here .

pytarget is opensource.

is also discussed on reboot.pro here .(iscsi targets and pytarget in particular).
