Hi teachers,

I am a geek that always want to find out the principle.

Today I have a new problem:

After installing the VC2005SP1 runtime in WinXP SP3,

in the registery

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Installations",

there are items like

"x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_x-ww_44262b86",

and, there are sub item

"downlevel_manifest.8.0.50727.6195" and "downlevel_payload.8.0.50727.6195"

in item "x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_x-ww_44262b86".

So, things that I want to know are:

What is the use of these registery item like "downlevel_manifest.8.0.50727.6195"?

What program will use them?

What is the meaning of "downlevel" in registery there?

What will be abnormal if I delete the items like "downlevel_manifest.8.0.50727.6195"?

Thanks!

downlevel manifests provide support and instructions for compatibility between versions.

generally speaking you should never just go deleting things from the registry. your not helping things to run cleaner/faster/tidier or saving any measurable amount of space.

you shouldn't need them for building a PE.

Consequently, if you are using a project that I work on Win7PE/Win8PE/Win10PE we have already created a script that will add any version of VC++ runtime you need. Its under the components folder in Winbuilder and titled MS Visual C++ Runtime

as the script is already INCLUDED by default in all major projects Win7PESE/Win8PESE/Win10PESE I haven't updated the download center in a long time. if you are not using one of the listed projects you can download the latest version here:

make sure you download BOTH files and place them together in the same folder of your project. I'll try and update the download center when i have time.
