On Skype I see his status sometimes changing between Online, Busy, Absent.

So he is appearently still alive.

Maybe rather busy.

Hello!

Had my family (son, grandma) over from Portugal to visit for a couple of weeks and wanted to pass more time in the outdoors with them. Also, work got more intensive in recent months. Barely enough time for what I really enjoy following-up online.

On a plus note, work has been ramping up in challenges: http://nunobrito1981...rt-startup.html

Next months are on the way to build a server with >800Tb storage.  :pressure:

HEY Nuno!

welcome back ;-) Im glad to see you enjoy the family and outdoors. I started wondering about you when the 524 error accessing reboot.pro was starting to become more frequent and longer duration but it seemed to have stopped and has been good for the last several days.

congratulations on making it to the Top 20 (a podium position no less) also. pretty cool stuff!

thanks for chiming in too!

800Tb whaooouuuu

with 4k sector or 1/2k ?

most raid cards are not updated for 4k...or drive above 2To...[ while intel and its old ichr10 are having no bugs with them...2008...]

I have no idea about the size of sectors or RAID cards at this point. The plan is getting two of these ready-to-use machines with x60 HDDs each: http://45drives.com/...torage/xl60.php

The file system will likely be something as XFS, albeit in the way how we are storing files it is possible to use just about any normal file system and managed to store a trillion files related to open source. No magic involved, just using many millions of zip files within sub-folders to beat the limitations of too many files inside a single folder.

With these conditions the goal is to store about 10 trillion files and in the process develop the software that performs fast enough to read through all these files within one~two weeks. One of the things discussed was the hypothesis that with a proper RAID setup over these 60 drives we can achieve quite high read speeds. Let's see.

if quantum computing is real and becomes available, I think Nuno will probably be the first to boot into even higher realms with one LOL!

boxes are nice ....i would not take their ready machine because they are "old-fashioned" .

i think i would take from them :
3 x boxes  : Storinator Direct-Wired: Enclosure
with 3 x Redundant Power Supply

for mainboard i would take

3 x  [ X10DRH-CT ]

3 x 4 x LSI SAS 9361-8I
[40 hd per box]

3 x 4 x pci vga cooler
cool cheap thing for lsi

of course 3 x 3 or 4 ssd for os[es] [512 Go] [ main os plus one windows plus one for mint ]

i would go watercooling for cpu and will do it for chipsets too , koolance does some crazy connectors , ekwb makes some very double-pumps 5 1/4 boxes with reservoir .

for hard-drive , i would select 4k clusters and not in raid , they are really better than 512 octet when formatted with ntfs that windows always does in 4ko...
i would use ntfs because it s fast and there are a lot of tool for checking and defrag while xfs should not ...

if you need workers...i can help ;']

I'd be concerned with hardware that involves water and electricity together. You're welcome to come over to help building this setup, we are getting this thing built in Frankfurt.

I'll get a new thread open to continue this talk about the dream configuration for a beast machine.

the weather can be very hot ...like 34-38 *c , these boards can run all days [thank to the water that stores well energy ]...of course they did not  :loleverybody:   i prefer to use them a long time  :lamo:  to kill them with "benches"  :horse:

Well its good to know Nuno is only working on projects. For all I knew, Nuno posted a topic saying he was going to upgrade to Windows 10, then he disappeared! :alien:

I'm worried about upgrading. Still don't have a replacement for some of the apps there.

the better is to keep focus on the server with >800Tb storage.

the drivers and os being some linux and win7 , for the first days ...

win10 is crappy , like vista it only has directx12 update as bonus....
