Unfortunately they reveal very litle details on the background that preceded and followed this confrontation so I went to wikipedia to find out more about the history behind the film.
I was really surprised to see that most of the movie truly relates to 300 spartans facing a really outnumbered oponent - if you see the movie you might end up thinking that they shed more blood than any action movie from the 90's - but on the wiki you quickly find that most of the facts do match.
Nevertheless it's a good option for a weekend action movie - hope you like the trailer..
More details of the historical context can be found here:

I like the part where the women tells the senator that betrays her the same lines he gave her when he took advantage of her. It will hurt and it will be painfull and you wont enjoy this. Something like that. I was laughing! Overall an excellent movie.

The movie was really good.
I too was keen to see it beacause it was made by the same people as Sin City (wich was a REALLY great movie).
I especially like the director's of showing every thought that goes on in the character's mind. I liked the same thing in Sin City. That way, the movie has a lot more sense, and it can accurately present everything from the characters point of view.
I will certainly look out for movies made by these people
