With all due respect to the Author/Inventor, it seems to me essentially UNLIKE a mouse, but rather very similar to a touchpad, though without the feature of touch sensitivity (i.e. tapping).
Am I missing something?

It seems that "mouse" is catchier than "touchpad".
This doesn't seem like a bad project, it is already funded in about 38k USD as we speak.

And also much more accurate and intuitive to use, BTW.

No, the idea is as good as it can be (though inaccurately represented) but if I get it right it's use is limited to tablets (because laptops/notebooks/netbooks ALREADY have a touchpad) and to tablet use WHEN you have a plain, steady desk to project on.
What I actually miss on a tablet in those conditions is however more the lack of a keyboard than the lack of a mouse (or of the touchpad) for which the touchscreen is usually IMHO "good enough" substitute.
Possibly *something like*:

which also doubles as a mouse touchpad. might be more useful, I remember trying something similar many years ago (it was some third party accessory for the Palm III or IV, cannot remember details) and it wasn't that bad as a keyboard substitute.
And from what can be get from TheHive's ONLY SEEMINGLY duplicate post:

they do lack some fantasy in the naming of the product, as ODiN vs. ODIN (both being "portable" and "projectors") may create some confusion (possibly a YABBC, Yet Another Billy Bob Case )
