Hi guys,

 

Anyone same problem?

I have the new Lenovo Flex 2 14inch laptop.

I went ahead and used my LiveXP and Win7PE (which both work very well on my old laptops/systems, no problems at all)

But on my new Lenovo laptop, they both refuse to show my USB stick after booting in the live environment.

So now i can't use the PPAPPS for example etc. (But that's not a problem, i can slipstream them in the ISO or so)

But my problem is.. why is my Lenovo not showing my USB ports at all...?

No matter what i plug in them, they don't work. Even not my USB mouse....

 

Also tried booting with Slitaz 4.0 => all usb ports still not working...

 

But when i boot in Windows 8.1 own system of Lenovo, they all work?!

 

Looks like Lenovo blocks USB ports, when booting with an external media?

 

Any ideas guys?

I already went in the BIOS, switched to legacy USB, switched from UEFI to Legacy boot too, but nothing...

I can't live without my LiveXP USB stick...

 

Any help is appreciated!

That's a 8 Series chipset.

Do you use black or blue USB ports?

There are USB 3.0 Windows 7 drivers, but no XP drivers.
Try newer USB 3.0 drivers (Win7) or change BIOS settings (XP and Win7).

After I changed the XHCI mode to "auto" ( from "smart auto" ) I never have that problem.

this did the trick:

changed xhci to auto, from enabled.

now all my USB work in LiveXP and Win7PE and SliTaz!

 

Here are answers on your questions if relevant:

 

-yes, that's the one

-yes, i used both black and blue ports before changing the option in BIOS!

 

After diving in the BIOS again, i saw the XHCI option, and BAM! there are my USB ports now!

 

Now next problem is:

-i can't see my Lenovo HD in LiveXP.

In Win7PE i see all partition.

 

I tried installing mass storage drivers pack (from 2012), but no luck. Nothing recognized by driver importer. 

 

Is there another trick or driver package to use for LiveXP, maybe to recognize my Lenovo HD?

 

Then i would be 100% satisfied (again) with my LiveXP iso

Strange, I expected the black USB 2.0 ports to work at all xhci BIOS settings. That's strange hardware or BIOS implementation.
 

Now next problem is:

The mass storage controller is set to AHCI mode at BIOS.

One way: change BIOS to IDE emulation mode.
Do you use a SSD disk?
Be aware: Win 8.1 won't boot out of the box anymore.
A registry change is required too.

Or a modded RST textmode driver v11.2.0.1006 should work at XP.

Now i'm still cloning and setting up the disk so i can put an SSD in it for more speed

Can't find any drivers for XP for my Lenovo unfortunately..

 

i could add the drivers by drvimp by Amalux way.

This way before LiveXP starts completely drvimp can import massstorage drivers and thus recongnize my Lenovo HD

But if there aren't any drivers for XP from Lenovo, i can't test this. I guess...

Windows 8 UEFI uses GPT partitions.
SliTaz and Win7PE supports GPT, but not XP.
2003 disk.sys supports GPT too. 2003 disk.sys works at a XP PE.

The chipset manufacturer Intel dosn't provide a driver, hence Laptop manufacturer dosn't provides a driver.

The previous mentioned modded driver v11.2.0.1006 should support the mass storage controller.
But plain XP files won't mount the GPT partition.

Ah well... it was time for a change anyways.

I used my LiveXP for over 5 years now. And saved me a thousand times or more a lot of headache! 

I'm sorry LiveXP... but i have to, I think i will go for a Win8PE disk now...

Well, yes and no.

You may use a hybrid partition scheme in the MBR, you could actually even make one on-the-fly through grub4dos use, as long as you are within the 2.2 Tb size limit this represents a valid option, and making the LiveXP out of a Server 2003 - apart possible breaking of the EULA, which may or may not apply - is as easy as making one out of XP.

Technically: copy and paste 2003 disk.sys to LiveXP to read a GPT disk.

Wait wait wait... you guys... so there is actually some hope for me? And my LiveXP in combination with my new Lenovo?

 

So i have to replace the disk.sys file in LiveXP with the one from 2003 CD? Is that really all?

Can i do it by (i.e. PowerISO and some WIM software to integrate this file) or will i have to build my (new) LiveXP ISO (based on 2003) completely from scratch?

Well i have a legal windows server 2003 sp2 cd here, so that shouldn't be a (legal) problem now.

 

Anyway, i have some time to spare in the weekend, so if this IS possible... this is then wonderful!

But i would want a Win8PE too next to my LiveXP. Thanks for confirming this @cdob!

Generally speaking, editing (bootable or WinPE or both) .iso's is not the best idea in the world, it takes a few minutes I believe to rebuild a PE, and in case you can just recreate the .iso with mkisofs (or oscdimg) after having replaced the disk.sys in the "source", while of course .wim is an editable format so you will have no issue with that.

Well, the generic idea is (say):

1. boot to the stick/CD/DVD however to grub4dos
2. make a backup of the original MBR (the one containing the "protective GPT partition entry spanning over the whole disk"
3. create new partition entries in the MBR (some limitations may apply)
4. continue booting to the PE
5. do whatever you are booting to the PE for
6. either before rebooting/switching off the PC/exiting the PE or after a reboot to grub4dos restore the backed up MBR as it was before.

 

Steps #1, #2, #3 and #4 can be automated through a grub4dos batch/menu the #5 is of course up to you ,  #6 could most probably be automated on PE exit, but you should remember to make sure that the original MBR has been restored.

A good starting place for GPT/MBR Hybrid partitioning would be here:

which proposes a way to have a "permanent modification" to a GPT disk, in order to be able to boot grub4dos from it, but that contains as a side effect (or collateral damage ) some useful info on hybrid partitioning.

Guys,

 

This is what i did. I think it is because of missing drivers in my liveXP.

 

1) I imported the disk.sys file in my LXP

2) rebooted with new ISO

3) Still no SSD disk in my Lenovo...

4) attached my old Lenovo SSHD (the original GPT disk, which i could not mount nor see) via a USB cable, and voila now i see all the partitions of mij external HD!

(so the disk.sys file works now in LXP)

5) Even when i remove internal SSD en connect it also via USB, and then boot my lenovo (thus without disk in it), i can mount it because of GPT disk.sys file now in LXP.

 

But still no luck with internal Lenovo disk.

So my conclusion is... i need the correct working mass storage drivers supported in LiveXP

(PS: no luck with mass storage from cdob's post, and no luck with drivers from driverpacks)

 

Well... i'm ut of ideas. Hopefully there will be anyone who develops this mass storage driver...

FOUND IT!

Drivers for newest Lenovo systems are in Driverpack Solution package version 1414 (don't know if i'm allowed to mention here?)!!!

So if any of you guys have this problem, just update your mass storage drivers in your LiveXP with newest in DPS, and bam.. LiveXP is still alive and kicking on the new systems!

I'm the happiest person now!
