Vista is not (yet) emulated correctly by qemu, but some work has been done to complete this support.

It seems to be necessary to replace the original BIOS file with a modified version wich will add support for EFI - the same type of procedure used for booting Mac's

A qemu developer has provided this new bios file, but it won't work with the latest stable qemu 0.9.0 - only with the latest CVS snapshot of the emulator, here's the respective message from Fabrice Bellard:

Some forum discussion and quick guide here:

But under Virtual box (based on qemu) this really doesn't seem to be an issue at all since they provide support for EFI (and Vista) for quite some time now - anyone care to dig further and find a solution to avoid installing virtual box and simply use qemu?

No complains against virtual box, but qemu is completely free to be redistributed and way smaller in size..
