I want to install linux on windows xp, with dual boot and...

Highlighted terms are contradictory. If you want to install Ubuntu ON XP, use virtual machine. If you want to dual boot, Ubuntu installer will take you through the process.

For a novice user, Virtual Machine is the best option to fiddle with. You can install not only Ubuntu, but also whatever OS you may need without risking your data.
