hey all
I want to make win98 bootable cd with usb support

so what I did is :

1)Downloaded win98 boot image from
Windows 98 Boot Disk Download | AllBootDisks - Providing Free Boot Disk Downloads. MS-DOS to Windows XP.

2)Modified two files to :

autoexec.bat

@ECHO OFF

LH MSCDEX /d:USBCD001

config.sys

[COMMON]

DOS=HIGH,UMB

lastdrive=Z

device=HIMEM.SYS

devicehigh=USBASPI.SYS /v /w /e

devicehigh=DI1000DD.SYS

devicehigh=USBCD.SYS /d:USBCD001

NOTE ; I am using VirtualBox.

Well,

with all due respect, what you can do, at the most from that bootdisk is a DOS 7.1 (and not a Windows 98) *something*.

But it is not clear also the goal.

You want CD-ROM support to the bootable CD, why? (I mean a "normal" DOS 7.1 needs not CD-ROM support to "load itself", only to load the "rest of the CD")

And you want support for USB connected CD-ROM?

Why are you making the tests in a VM? (hardware support in general is already "shaky" in DOS, and USB particularly, a Virtualized Environment is not a suitable "test platform" for hardware drivers).

Maybe if you describe your "final goal" it would be possible to assist you in reaching it.

If you want to test USB support in DOS under that VM, you can try this bootdisk:

http://johnson.tmfc....dos/usbdrv.html

likely if any of the drivers/setup in it won't work you won't be able to have it working anyway.

First of all thank you very much for your reply.

Second of all , What I am intending to do is accessing My Flash Drive(Hard-Disk Drive) via DOS.

so I could use the command

cd x:\

My CD-ROM is a built in (does not use usb connection)

All the idea is to access the flash drive from dos.

thank you:)

Good :).

Which Operating System is your machine running?

(easiest would be to add - temporarily - a multi-boot option and then test the floppy as "floppy image", before making a CD of it).

Yes, it matters, in the sense that it is very likely that NO Dos drivers will be able to manage the Virtual hardware that VirtualBox provides. (I thought that I was clear on that and that you wanted to try on "real" hardware).

The few references I could find all seem like tales of horror:

https://forums.virtu...opic.php?t=1038

If you want to access your USB hard disk from a VM, then it would be much easier if you run another VM, Qemu.

The Qemu + Qemu Manager running on a NT based system (such as 7):

http://www.sorted-sy...mu_manager.html

allows to "hook" to the Virtual Machine a \\.\PhysicalDrive, which can well be your USB hard disk, the DOS won't need any USB driver, as the device will be presented to it as it was an internal hard disk.

It is possible to do the same in VirtualBox, by using a "physical" VMDK, but is more complex:

http://www.sysprobs....zation-software

As a side note, remember that DOS can only access (without third party drivers) only FAT12/16 and FAT32 formatted partitions/volumes, not NTFS, and there could be issues connected to size of the hard disk, if bigger than 128 Gb).

I get these errors :

Doing WHAT? :w00t:

You have just been suggested to either NOT use any USB driver (if you want to access the disk from a VM) or try first another bootdisk (if you want to try from a real machine).

Additionally there may be a issue - as said - with the specific device (like too large or incompatible filesystem) :unsure:

Carpenter's comparison if needed:

E. I am trying to glue two pieces of wood by hitting them with a hammer.

W. If you want to join two pieces of wood together you need to use glue or, alternatively, the hammer with some nails, it would be easier to use screws instead however.

E. This is what happens ...

W. Doing WHAT?
