boot win8pese from hard-disk failed in vmware virtual machine

Best Answer tunpishuang , 18 April 2013 - 12:52 AM

problem solved. just replace windows 7's bootmgr.efi and bootmgfw.efi with windows 8's bootmgr.efi and bootmgfw.efi on EFI partition.

Dont's forget to replace MUI file for these two files too.

Finally  win8pese boots fine on my windows 7 uefi vmware virtual machine.

I made a win8pese.wim file by winbuilder win8pese project. I installed win8pese.wim on the hard-disk referenced by http://technet.micro...1(v=ws.10).aspx

My system is windows 7 sp1 UEFI-bios installed on my vmware virtual machine.

Here is the BCD configuration:

Windows Boot Manager
--------------------
标识符                  {bootmgr}
device                  partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume1
path                    \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
description             Windows Boot Manager
locale                  zh-CN
inherit                 {globalsettings}
default                 {current}
resumeobject            {2fcc2065-8344-11e2-8721-9be7cfd1b2a1}
displayorder            {current}
                        {b4af31de-2ca1-474f-95bc-0d4805bec832}
toolsdisplayorder       {memdiag}
timeout                 3

Windows Boot Loader
-------------------
标识符                  {current}
device                  partition=C:
path                    \Windows\system32\winload.efi
description             Windows 7
locale                  zh-CN
inherit                 {bootloadersettings}
recoverysequence        {2fcc2067-8344-11e2-8721-9be7cfd1b2a1}
recoveryenabled         Yes
osdevice                partition=C:
systemroot              \Windows
resumeobject            {2fcc2065-8344-11e2-8721-9be7cfd1b2a1}
nx                      OptIn

Windows Boot Loader
-------------------
标识符                  {b4af31de-2ca1-474f-95bc-0d4805bec832}
device                  ramdisk=[C:]\SOURCES\win8pese.WIM,{ramdiskoptions}
path                    \windows\system32\winload.efi
description             win8pese
osdevice                ramdisk=[C:]\SOURCES\win8pese.WIM,{ramdiskoptions}
systemroot              \WINDOWS
nx                      OptIn
detecthal               Yes
winpe                   Yes

-------------

After boot into UEFI-menu. I choose "SCSI IDE" menu. And then a windows boot manager with two options:

1.Windows 7

2.Win8pese

I choose Win8pese.

Then screen show me windows is loading files. when the loading files progress bar goes to an end. vmware pop-out a failed message say:

A fault has occurred causing a virtual CPU to enter the shutdown state.
If this fault had occurred outside of a virtual machine,
it would have caused the physical machine to restart.
The shutdown state can be reached by incorrectly configuring the virtual machine,
a bug in the guest operating system,
or a problem in VMware Workstation.
Click OK to restart the virtual machine or Cancel to power off the virtual machine.

So, I guess win8pese cannot boot on harddisk with windows 7 UEFI-bios installed ? right ? If not, how to correct this? thx in advance.

Hi tunpishuang ;)

Welcome to reboot.pro. Please try reducing the size of wim file that has been compressed. This error can be caused by the emergence of a very large file size. Kind regards :hi:

I am not sure what you are booting to the WIn 8 PE via teh WIM for but perhaps the easiest way would be to download  EasyBCD and then choosing to load the Win PE from an ISO file on the HDD rather than the hard disk itself as a separate OS.  I have done this for my Windows 7 PE for about a year now and started to do it with my Win 8 PE as well - which I am still polishing.

Note that ISOs must be contiguous, that is all together on the HDD - unless you use the "Load from Memory" option which takes up a LOT more RAM, this can be achieved by using WinContig after it's been copied to the HDD.

Please ignore this if you are seeking the WIM boot for some other reason.

Thanks for your information. But I truly must boot from hard-disk.

I am using Win8PE-SE project default setting. the wim file size is about 240MB.
