Hi,

I'm currently considering to start a new "RAM-WebServer" project with the primary goal to create a powerful Windows Server 2003 based System which boots completely from RAM and also gets all HTML etc. files from RAM and thus should be able to archieve awesome response times compared to a common hard disk based setup. Anyone else interrested in such a project?

Isn't it overkill to use a Windows 2003 to setup a "pure" webserver in RAM?
Which webserver BTW?

Hello, good initiative.

However I agree with Wonko that Windows is an overkill for a pure RAM solution.

For example, Damn Small Linux claims to run from RAM and could well be used as an open source web server with Apache, MySQL and PHP support:

  • Boot from a business card CD as a live linux distribution (LiveCD)
  • Boot from a USB pen drive
  • Boot from within a host operating system (that's right, it can run *inside* Windows)
  • ...
  • Run fully in RAM with as little as 128MB (you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be!)
  • Modularly grow -- DSL is highly extendable without the need to customize

with Apache, MySQL and PHP support:

As a matter of fact Apache itself is very often overkill .... :whistling:

Apache is like Microsoft Word, it has a million options but you only need six. Nginx does those six things, and it does five of them 50 times faster than Apache.

Cherokee looks like a very good option, specially like the web page support for administration tasks.
