Hi, I'd like to create a virtual partition CD-Rom Partition in my USB Flash drive like that one that there's in the Sandisk Cruzer Micro U3. If I look in other forum topics I don't get answers but only other questions like "Why are you trying to make that?", "What's that for?", "Why do you need that?", "What are you trying to do?", "What's CDFS?".... I know that this can be done but on the internet I could not find any universal tools to make that possible. The only tools that there are are difficult to use and are downloaded from Russian sites or Chinese sites. Can you explain me how to do that? I want to take an installer always with me in a Read-Only Partition. I also want to know that to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks. :)

The only tools are special manufacturers tools. Why not buy a U3 flash pen and use the tools that go with it?
The other alternative is to copy the ISO to a 2nd partition on a flash drive - see Tutorial #22 on my site.

@Michele13
Only special USB Sticks can do that. You need a U3 stick for that and than the special manufacturers tool, like steve6375 already said.
There are some sticks, which can do that without being marketed as U3 sticks, but they're harder to find.

btw. No use looking for a point and click, one size fits all tool. There is none!

Try this: UFDisk Utility 1.0.0.2 http://mfiles.naver....ies_1.0.0.2.exe
Works great with Lexar flashdrives and they don't have to be U3 , others I'm not so sure. Has provision to load iso file and to boot it as cdrom.
With this your PC will see it as cdrom drive.

UFDisk only works with an SMI controller - you can use ChipGenius to identify what controller you have (or just go through all your USB pens using UFDISK).
I have over 20 USb pens and all the Lexar pens are detected, also a freebie Microsoft pen and a Netac pen. None of the others (inc. Maxell, Sandisk Slice Cruzer,Patriot, Busbi, Verbatim and Corsair, etc.) worked.
Note: The ones that did work also work with Bootit.exe.

These are the ones detected by SMI UFDisk Utilities 1.0.0.2 (only one lexar pen example shown)

I've gotten quite good at doing "Phison" based USB sticks, whose controllers I have found in TDK, Imation, and Verbatim.

I even managed to make an old 2251-50 believe it was two floppy disks. Haven't tried actually booting it though.

Here's a Verbatim I turned into a DVD-ROM... if you insert it into a Mac, it automatically launches DVD Player and starts to play.

Unfortunately it is a read only situation, although you can write to the rest of the USB stick no problems.

The floppy disks OTOH, were fully writable. So, if they boot, I will be well happy. So much easier to prep a boot disk for stuff.

(PS: Yes, I changed the VID and PID, as well as the description field... I was bored)

oh, maybe i changed the serial number too :P

I used one of the mass production tools succesfully for a SMI usb controller that had the same vid, pid, as the one at the top of Steve 6375's list
Then I discovered UFD Utility would do the same more flexibly and simply for that device:
Tools were downloaded from flashboot.ru put that in your search engine and use translate if you like a challenge.

Edit
echo above statement trust Steve6375

Just tried Chrome + translation for above Topic, i'm normally off topic but it works pretty good they have obviously slowed down translation services on other browsers (otherwise known as good market domination plan). Doesnt leave excuses for not learning things from dare I say foreign language websites.
There's no excuses now for not researching your subject and only asking when your really stuck::::

Really? It's not that hard to navigate it in Russian... from http://flashboot.ru/ on the right hand side, is a link to
SMI SM3257ENAA MPTool V2.03.58 v8 K1129T

Then, you just have to know the following key phrases:

  • Download
    Posted Image
  • Copy this stupid code: "Повторите код:"
  • You got the stupid code wrong: "Неверно введён код, введите код правильно!"
  • Your download will begin in (N) seconds: "начнется автоматически через 5 секунд."

As for learning how to actually use the tools? Now that would be a challenge. I found a partial english guide for Phison chips, and now it all makes sense. But I have never had any luck with other brands.

I did follow steve's instructions, I even have a few "Product Model: JD FIREFLY" Lexar's laying about. But I found that all it did was create an ISO sized USB stick, rather than something that actually enumerated as a CD/DVD ROM.

I'll try again, but I may as well post my abbreviated guide to doing it the Phison way. Even money that the Verbatim stick that steve mention would have been a Phison.
