Windows 9x had the great feature of "Shutdown to Dos".
I wonder if it was possible to write a NT kernel driver that would unload windows and then hand over control to Grub or DOS.
If it was possible to quit a 32bit protected mode Windows 95/98 session to DOS it is likely that some one could create a hack to unload windows NTs that way, too!
It would be really great if it would be possible to quickly switch from one OS to another without having to reboot!

Why would you need to do this?
DosBox or QEMU+ a DOS image will let you quickly run DOS within Windows. Although with your method, you could switch to DOS quite quickly (after Windows takes a while to shutdown), you would still need to boot back to Windows afterwards?

Using VMs ist fine, but not as fast as running them natively and with limited direct access to the hardware.
