Has anyone been able to successfully restore a Win 7 system disk in Win7PE? This past weekend I tried restoring my boot drive and was disappointed to find that nothing worked. I got all kinds of strange and inconsistent errors. Disappointing to say the least.

I've tried restoring using Driveimage XML and Easeus Todo Backup Free. Driveimage XML appears to work in that it successfully copies partition and file data to the new drive, but fails to boot. Winodws system restore can't find any Windows OS on the disk to repair. Easeus Todo Backup gives an error message saying something like "the specified image cannot be found", even though I can clearly browse and select the backup file. Haven't tried Macrium Reflect yet.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong here? If I can't restore my system partition then Win7PE is pretty much useless to me. If it matters, I'm trying to restore to an SSD. Win7PE was built using a Windows 7 Professional x86 SP1-U source.

Has anyone been able to successfully restore a Win 7 system disk in Win7PE?

Hundreds of times, on many different machines without issue. I agree it's a must have function of any good rescue disk.

Well, good for you? Forgive me for being a little blunt here, but that doesn't help at all. Care to elaborate a bit? Which software did you use? What version of Windows did you restore? Was the restore done on a mechanical hard drive or an SSD?

Sorry, I hate it when people do that; just being lazy.

Which software did you use? What version of Windows did you restore?

Everything I use is available here: http://reboot.pro/4111/ and I've restored everything from XP to Win 7 x64 SP1.

Was the restore done on a mechanical hard drive or an SSD?

I missed the SSD reference, all machines I work on are standard IDE, SATA, USB, UFD etc. I have not run across an SSD to test yet but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Does this mean you did a working backup/restore using Macrium Reflect? I saw in the script thread that it has a drive letter reassigning problem that makes me doubtful about it's functionality in Win7PE.

I generally use Acronis, occasionally Ghost; however, I have had no issues using the PE version of MR and there's no drive shift (or disappearance) with the portable version ;)

Hello part11,

It seems there is a problem with your pe build.

[ I make mine by hand and have never had a problem restoring images with Macrium ,Easeus and Paragon. ].

Because Amalux says his work fine - it looks like your particular pe build has an issue.

Perhaps try and build it again.

I will give winbuilder a run and see if it works ok for me.

I have used both Paragon Drive Backup Pro and Paragon Hdm Pro to backup and restore a windows 7 x64 partition.

Just tried winbuilder - macrium and paragon seem to work ok.

There is an odd issue with renaming folders - prompts a message the folder is no longer in this location.

That is a registry issue.

I don't know if your problem is somehow related to that.

Could you be more specific? Renaming folders in what? Explorer? A specific backup program?

Anyway, I have no way of telling what the issue is. I've tried rebuilding the project using the most minimum of options in WinBuilder and I still get this problem with Easeus Todo. I've contacted the script writer so he knows about my issue. He thinks it might be an issue with the way Easeus Todo mounts the backup file into a virtual drive (?). Regardless I have no way of solving this myself. I was able to successfully restore using Driveimage XML last night though. I'll still need to test Macrium Reflect and possibly Acronis.

Rt click any folder, select rename . I get the message "could not find this item.

It seems that is due to removing the libraries, oddly.

Fixed the error by putting back these:

I posted instructions on Todo website for adding it to pe.

I had v4 working great in my pe3.1 x86 and x64 builds a while ago.

The new free Todo has far fewer functions and annoying upgrade messages.

I am not using it anymore.

Hmm, I'm not sure it's related to the problem I'm having, but I'll double check the folder renaming thing.

EDIT: Ok I just checked again and I can rename files and folders just fine in explorer. I'm not sure how your registry fix is related to my problem at all. It sounds like it's specific to your build.

As far as I can tell, win7 pe se removes the librararies even if you uncheck the option to do so.

Not sure how you managed to keep those entries.

I don't get any of that in my own hand built versions of course.

Might be a problem with the Todo script, of course.

I haven't looked at it - I might run off a x86 build with winbuilder and put Todo in - I will see how that goes.

Which version of Todo are you using?

I'm using the free version 4.0.0.5.

And no, I have no idea how I managed to keep those registry libraries. I'm completely reliant on other user-made scripts and the Winbuilder repository (?) for my particular Win7PE build. Like I said, I've already contacted the script author for Easeus Todo Backup, so he's aware of my problem. It's apparent you build your own custom PE from scratch, so I don't see how your experience is relevant to mine if our builds are going to be totally different.

I normally make my own.

However, I just ran winbuilder win 7pese and tested it - those are the results I am giving you.

You might try booting up your winbuilder pe and try running the Todo installer to install it directly into your booted pe.

If the freshly installed Todo works fine , then the pe build is ok
