Bogdan Koval has emailed me with a script that he has developed to partition and format a bootable USB drive under linux (and install syslinux to the MBR). He says this method makes a drive which boots on a larger range of systems. Please see the second method on my website at http://www.rmprepusb...ls/usbpreplinux for details of his script. I have not tried it personally yet.

partprobe -s $flash #modify flash sectors #erase 65 sector (strange data is here) echo Correct FAT boot sectors dd if=/dev/zero of=$flash bs=512 count=1 seek=65
Uses standard tools and syslinux, but I find this interesting. What is this sector 65, strange data I wonder?
