hi mr. steve

1- thanks for the great tool

2- have you tried Ultimate Boot CD 5.2.8 with easy2boot to test all the apps

for me, parted magic from ubcd initiates but then says that it can't find pmagic_2013_08_01.sqfs and stops

here are the links for the iso

http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr...bcd/ubcd528.iso

or

http://mirror.intern...bcd/ubcd528.iso

Regards

Hi

When reporting a problem please give details of your equipment and how you tested.

I tested with

Asus EeePC 904HA  1Gb RAM  32-bit Atom CPU

E2B v1.29 = 2TB WD Passport USB drive on NTFS partition

UBCD 5.2.9

I named ISO file as ubcd529.iso and placed it in \_ISO\MAINMENU

It booted from main menu and I chose Parted Magic 2013_08_01_i586 option from UBCD menu

Default settings (Runs from RAM)

It found the PMAGIC_2013_08_01.SQFS file. loaded it into RAM and booted to a nice Desktop.

No problem!

I also tested 5.2.8 - no problem.

I tested under DavidB's VMUB uitility + VBox and it could not find SQFS - so please use a REAL SYSTEM for testing.

I formatted an 8GB USB Flash stick as FAT32 and 5.2.8 boots fine on my EeePC.

Have you a different system you could try?

Is the ISO MD5 hash correct and size correct?

MD5: CD91156EC71D80EC91A05353DB2B18D5
SHA-1: 47418AD4698F40CBBD570C6FEAFEEE71BED07F29

original

http://mirror.komsys...ubcd528.iso.md5

as for a different systm, not right now, when it is availabe, will try

you mentioned that it didn't work on a vm so if you try to find a way to make it work there maybe it will work here

I have the same ISO (MD5 matches).

It does run under QEMU.

  1. Use RMPrepUSB
  2. Untick the 'No User Prompts' checkbox
  3. Press F11
  4. Enter 0 for hard disk
  5. Enter 1100 for memory size

Should boot OK....

P.S. Also boots OK with VBox+DavidB's utility if VT is turned off on CPU in the VM settings (or in VMUB utility).

I don't know of any but I am not a linux guru (or even a linux user!). As linux is 'so much better than Windows' and so 'open source' and so 'much more secure' than Windows (seen the news lately?), there should be utility around somewhere? :loleverybody:

solved

the problem was the 16 gb flash drive. it didn't like parted magic

tested a 2 gb drive and it went fine

this is strange cause the 16 gb booted parted magic fine in the quick emulator

on the real system, parted magic in ubcd was the only problem so far in all the isos tested. all the other isos went fine

thanks mr. steve for the help and the great effort

regards

If it booted fine in the emulator then the problem is with the BIOS. Try the trick of using grub4dos 0.4.6a with the 16GB drive - see my blog here

When you have finished laughing, you may want to be aware that an experimental version of Ultradefrag exists, though it is not for the newbie, not for the faint of heart:

This is using grub4dos .4.6.a with usb --init and  March 5th 2014 version of grldr  on 2GB 'bad' USB flash drive formatted as NTFS?

the 16gb drive is the one that doesn't start parted magic and the test is on it

so installed easy2boot and grub4dos like post #603 once with fat32 and the other ntfs

downloaded the march 5th grldr file from here and replaced the one on the drive with it

added this as first line to menu.lst
usb --init

restarted

it showed grub4dos 0.4.6a and the root is (0x80, 0)
it then looked for usb ports and booted

and the error above appeared after choosing the iso

Q
if the bios and the 2gb drive started parted magic

doesn's that say that the bios is not buggy and the 16 gb drive is the problem
or
the bios worked with 2gb and not with the 16gb and that is the bug
??

If the same 16GB stick boots fine in an emulator then it must be the system's BIOS that is faulty.

Did you try booting it using RMPrepUSB - QEMU (as here)?

So boots in QEMU but not on 'bad' system?

Is there no setting in the BIOS Setup menu for USB boot devices?

You say that with the 0.4.6a version of grld 'it looked for USB ports and then booted' - did it find the USB flash drive? It should report '1 device found 0x80'?

1-
yes

2-
in bios
settings that mention usb

usb emulation enabled
usb wake support disabled

3-
it says
"... scanning usb devices ..."
then skips to the next screen which is
"booting easy2boot - please wait..."

well my laptop is a new one and recently applied a bios update to it
there might be an upcoming update that is not buggy

Sounds like the usb driver did not detect your usb drive - if it did then the bug should be fixed.

Can you get to the grub4dos command prompt (press p in E2B menu and then type password of easy2boot then press c)

and in console type

usb --init

Does it report any devices?

What is your system mainboard/model of Dell Insipron?  I have a 530 and the grub4dos driver doesn't work on that, but does on some laptops I have.

Always check for latest BIOS...

1-

grub> usb --init

found 1 usb devices . device num: 0x80;

2-

Dell Inspiron 5537

checking for driver and bios updates weekly on dell website

Well, that's really odd! If the grub4dos USB driver is installed there should be no BIOS problems accessing the USB drive (0x80).

I guess you need to try a different 16GB USB drive (same size as the other one in case it is a size issue) - if it fails in the same way then it must be the BIOS that is bad.
