I think it's funny, that people consider this an error of the human visual system.

What would the world be like, if we would see things in absolute values, like a camera?

Imagine, you're standing with your best girl outside in the bright summer sun, holding a white sheet of paper.
Suddenly a cloud comes before the sun.
Where has your sheet of paper disappeared to? And who the heck is that person standing besides you?

For us, white stays white and black stays black, in brightest sunshine and blackest night. And that's good so.
