A 20mb dos image thats bootable, how?
Posted 10 November 2011 - 05:04 AM
All I want to do is create a bootable image file, that will boot dos so i can execute a dos program stored in the same image. The total payload is about 12 mb.
I've looked at a lot of threads and informaiton on the net and not had much luck. I got close with eltorito.sys but due to fdd emulation ended up being unsuccesful. My test image worked under vmware but fails on real systems.
I've now gone back to the drawing board.... how can i make a simple bootable image file that will boot dos and is not constrained by fdd emulation ? I've tried the images on the website for bcdw but they don't seem to be bootable.
Basically I'm trying to create a ima/img file that has a dos hdd diagnostic program on it, that I can then boot via a pxe menu.

You are spreading partial info on what you want to do on half the internet boards.
Any of 911CD, MSFN or reboot.pro have members (very often they are THE SAME ONES ) that can help you, but this way info is scattered on half the internet on "partial threads/reandom posts", with the final result that people willing to try and help you takes more time chasing you than in actually helping you.
Please make up your mind, choose one place (as already posted I suggest the thread on 911CD), and ONLY one place.

Look, there is NO PXE menu of any kind involved in your original request here:
I think in my frustration I was getting desperate.
Anyway I was able to create a disk image via http://reboot.pro/13171/
Now just waiting for the guys to test it to see if it works from the pxe menu.
If you don't post at this point *somewhere* an EXACT description of what you have done it is difficult that anyone can help you further.
Compare with the Standard Litany:
In the original thread you were given 4 (four) possible options:
- CD El-Torito Floppy Emulation boot (but with oversized floppy image)
- CD El-Torito Hard Disk Emulation
- CD No Emulation with grub4dos as bootmanager/booloader
- Traditional CD El-Torito Floppy Emulation and mounting of "rest of CD" through a driver
WHICH EXACT steps did you make to obtain the whatever image you have now?
IF, as I seem to understand you created a smal hard disk image AND it works allright in Qemu, all you have to do is to create a Hard Disk emulation .iso out of it, using mkisofs.exe as detailed here (already given links):
and test the resulting .iso in Qemu, set aside that it will (obviously) Read Only, it should behave EXACTLY as the original image.
mkisofs -hard-disk-boot -b <Hard disk image> -V <Volume label> -o <ISO image output> <Hard disk image>
BUT there is a caveat, unless the BoCHS BIOS (used in Qermu) has been updated recently, you will need to to use a BCDL floppy to boot the CD image in Qemu, see here:
The BCDL floppy can be get from here:

No prob whatsoever , only STOP doing it! (I mean posting partial and contrasting info on several threads over half the internet, the chasing game has been fun, but may soon become annoying )
Thanks Wonko its appreciated, apologies for my bad ettiquite. My only excuse I was a bit frustrated and impatient so it got the best of me when posting online.
