Back in the early CD days there were many computers incapable of booting from a CD. as the CD became more popular and more programs was installed from a boot CD this limit needed to be addressed. One answer was a floppy drive that started the boot process from the floppy then switched the boot over, or chainloaded to the CD.
My HP DV6000 laptop has oly room for 1 HD but I installed a second HD a DVD case which allows me to run both Linux and Win7. I can always access the DVD from an exterior USB drive but BIOS does not allow booting from external USB connected DVD. I can boot from a stick USB drive but find I can't always get them to boot the ISO I want booted (usig both RmPrepUSB ad YUMI).
While trying to install Mandriva 2011 from USB I discovered that it called for the DVD. I inserted the DVD in the external drive - rebooted from the USB ISO and when the DVD was called for the installation could continue from the DVD and I was able to complete it.
Is there any program that will duplicate what I now know works - ie start the boot from pen drive and transfer it to the external DVD once the USB driver is loaded.
Would any of you wise folks have a solution for my challenge so that I can always boot from my external CD/DVD?

but if you already have USB booting support in BIOS, grub4dos may also do, though it is possible that the external CD/DVD is not mapped by BIOS (and then you will need PLoP)

As far as i know, Plop does not support USB CD drives.

With no available BIOS extension, then it will depend entirely on the on-board BIOS, if it offers a "hook" for grub4dos it may work, if it doesn't it won't.

You try adding grldr to your "normal" internal disk boot and try booting the thingy with the USB DVD connected.
If grub4dos can find a (cd) device or (I doubt this) after a cdrom --init and map --hook you get a (cd1) device it means that it can *somehow* see the device.
But if the problem is booting a Linux distro CD, the way you used is simple enough. (or. most probably you can make a menu.lst entry capable of loading the .iso "fully" or with a "mixed mode approach") or try use the GRUB2 iso mapping capabilities.
