Hello everyone..

I tried steve6375's tut#43 to make a usb pen drive with ISOs of both Windows 7 x64 SP1 and Windows 8 Develop Preview (maybe more in the future) because I often install different operating systems on different computers (and for this, I bought a 32GB pen drive). I followed the tips in tut#43 and successfully got my usb pen drive booting with grub4dos, and booting into Windows 8 Installation.

However, after LOADISO succeeded loading the ISO file again, it can't find sources/install.wim and prompted me with "do you want to repair" or something...

And in the Windows 8 ISO, sources/install.wim is there...

So I can't install Windows 8 for now... because my computer doesn't have a DVD drive.

Could steve, or anyone else, help me with this?

I haven't yet tried Win8, but Win7 should work.
Try using SHIFT+F10 to get a command console and look for the virtual DVD drive letter. If you cannot find it, run LOADISO from the USB pen \firadisk (edit the LOADISO.cmd to turn ECHO ON and put PAUSE lines in so you can see what it does.

Does your new pen appear as a Removable drive in RMPrepUSB or a Hard disk?

Thanks for replying. I'm at work now and I will try it when I get back home... I think it's a Removable drive. I will check it when at home too.

BTW, the Windows 8 DP ISO I am using is as large as 4.8GB (because it includes Visual Studio For Metro). Does your method have memory limitation (like: something will went wrong if I try to use this ISO to install Win8 on a machine with 4GB or 2GB memory).
My desktop computer has 8GB memory, but my laptop only has 2GB... And I want to use one pen drive to install OS to these computers...

BTW 2, what does the last tag in AutoUnattend.xml mean? I see some Vista & wim words...

Hi Steve

I tried just now. As you said, the Windows 7 installation seemed to work (I procceeded to EULA and then exited, but it should work). However, when I tried Windows 8, it didn't work. I can't find any drive containing sources/install.wim..

So what should I add to the cmd to see more information? What should I echo?

And is it a problem caused by Win8 ISO's 4.8GB volume, while the Win7 ISO is of less than 3GB? I can ensure that the directory structure in the two ISOs are almost the same, especially for the sources/install.wim...

What happens if you run LOADISO manually after SHIFT+F10?

Just edit /firadisk/loadiso.cmd and add
echo on
after the @echo off line at the top

Then add
pause

at intervals where there is a few lines of gaps

and also at the end just before 'exit'

1. I added echo on and several pauses in LOADISO.CMD, got a lot of outputs.

2. Running LOADISO after SHIFT+F10 gives the same output as the automatically started one.

3. I uploaded the photos of LOADISO's output to flickr. Check

Boot from WIn 7 ISO but ask Firadisk to load Win8.ISO --> SUCCESS - \SOURCES\INSTALL.WIM FOUND (but WIn7 Setup does not recognise contents of Win8 install.wim so won't actually install it!)

Boot from Win 8 ISO but ask Firadisk to load Win7.ISO --> Firadisk loads but INSTALL.WIM NOT FOUND!

Conclusion: Firadisk is not compatible with Win 8 WinPE 6.2
