Ok, posting in Win98 forum. though now the problem lies in the usb stick.

Ok, a win98 comp with the 'good' usb driver, can't remember link to it, but research had shown it was an ok universal driver. (not the Win98Se one though)
Edit, That one?

Mem Stick in, ok, copy files to/from, ok.

Windows 98 Freeze, CTRL-ALT-DEL screen, do ctrl-alt-del to reboot or wait.
I waited, a bit. Then went for combination.

Now the originally FAT 32 stick 'is not formatted, do you want to format it now?'. Tried a few pcs, xp too. I DID NOT format.

Then opened up in Hxd. Files on stick are still there. (up to a certain point)

The whole boot sector is empty, actually a whole good 24550 sectors are empty, or full of e.g.:
YA..ZA..[A..\A..]A..^A.._A..`A..aA..bA..cA..dA..eA..fA..gA..hA..iA..jA..kA..lA..mA..nA..oA..pA..qA..rA..sA..tA..uA..vA..wA..xA..yA..zA..{A..|A..}A..~A...A..€A..

Tried Grubinst, 'Grubinst can't ..'.
Looked into Rmprepusb, I don't wanna do '6' just now, Prepare/Format
I could, I assume, try a testdisk.

Anyone with an idea? Thanks,

Plus the files I could just do a photorec, or copy the HXD hex to a file.

+it is a fake, so the whole disk is seen now, not just the good partition.

Actually, title shouldn't be "Pb after usb stick pullout, Windows 98 ", but "usb stick problem, Windows 98 freeeze", subtitle generic driver, bs out.
R.

Tried Testdisk Win, but what's the point of having the program write a new MBR if (after a search, of course) it doesn't know the fs? (which was there in the first place) (with the files).
Shall/ Should I use MBRBATCH? (not dubbio, thoughtful)

Trouble is, can't remember if the stick was formatted as Fat, Fat16, or Fat32.

There should exist or be created a tool that analyses the F**ing (fating?) data (files, I mean),
and get a whole idea of the File system!!

I mean, Man can put a man on the moon, so..

(I wonder if a cat would put a cat on the moon?)

I'll rephrase: Anyone know of a tool that would do the above?

As usual, thanks

Hehe! I am having ideas!
Feed a file to a program, the latter will analyse the repartition of the copy of the file which would be on the unknown fs drive, based on sectors/Heads. (then display the fs),
Mmm, but I wonder if fragmented files would make a fail?

Ok,so (Hi all)
I tried Lots of different tools (table recov). Then I stopped. Then a friend had a similar thing, so I went back. Told Him Testdisk.
Then I looked again for a solution.

The different tools I looked at at first, well they' re all
free trials. Thre's some good tools, some less. I like the idea of Find & Mount, simple tool, though didn't do the job.
Some others, also some good reference sites, to compare & links, instead of blindly trying google 1 by1.

In the end I wanted to save as much as possible, so as to reformat  ,instead of trying to refind any real existing partition and catching things from there.

Anyway, Rmprepusb. I knew stick was fake. I also knew the usable size. ( I also tried manually editig table) I sorta knew what I was doing (& had backups!)
Recalculate with Rmprepusb? ok.

Rmprepusb same size, same FS fat 32 as before. I thought the test would do writes on the stick so I thought all data would be lost. In fact no.

THe MFT.
The friend who had usb stick problem mentionned an "error message about something $MF?"
I knew about Mft, never gave it much thought.

Rmprepusb redrew Mbr, etc. I think the Mft is rewritten too.
What we maybe need is an option NOT TO rewrite the MFT.
To keep the previous one if one is sure what one is doing.
Steve? :ranting2:
Is that possible? Thanks
Anyway, mft or not, my stick was now openable in explorer, rather than 'insert volume here' thing. Appearing empty.
But from there, with testdisk photorec or other software would be happy with the mbr, I think.

(I think I missed a step explainig how I gotback the files, but anyway) (cause I did sumfing else too)

Thanks.

A new $MFT (Master File Table) is associated with formatting an NTFS filesystem. I would guess that what you are requesting is thus an option to prevent formatting.

Hi Shao

Wooh! Just been /seen a thunderstorm! They're very nice, these things! & the rain and all

True, very true!

Should I be talking about bitmap for Fat FS?

Rmprepusb when checking 'fake sticks does:

Quicktest: this is a quick DESTRUCTIVE 'capacity' check

I am probably wanting something that checks size, maybe AFTER a certain MiB size, if I know the previous size.
