how can I boot an .ima in VMware or other VM?

is it possible to boot xp from an .ima file in a virtual machine?

just trying to find a way arround using VMware converter now.

Yes, if it's a ramboot build, then you don't need any converter on it.

For conversion you can use "StarWind V2V Converter" its free...
