I endured it for 1500 seconds this morning, still trying to get back my focus after so many hours have passed..

It makes me laugh ....

Yes, tough to keep a serious mood.

Just for the record, if one can get ones hands on a mobile phone, even a 'stone age' one, one can see where the phone has been.
The other ones, don't keep a long track record and they don't record data in such a user friendly way, but they do record the transmitting towers they were connected to. Once one knows, where each of those towers is located, one can make a pretty good guess, where exactly the phone was, cause mobiles try to keep at all times connections to at least 3 towers.

Very interesting thought MedEvil.

I've read a bit more about this matter over the Internet and found this nice article: http://cellphonetrac...e-stations.html

Don't know if it is accurate, but does provide a thought to what is already done at the States and who knows where else: http://readersupport...tracking-device

I'm glad that I've stopped using a cellphone for over a year now.

:)

One thing they always forget to mention is, that accuracy improves greatly on a moving target.
Cause the switching from one tower to another gives not only an extra value to pinpoint location, it gives also direction and speed of movement and those two values allow to exclude a wide range of possible location from your list.

Let's say, i can pinpoint your location to an area of about 200m in diameter, but you move with 50km/h. Then i can safely exclude all buildings, sidewalks and streets that don't allow for such a speed. Then i also have direction of movement so i can exclude all streets not running in the required direction as well as lanes running in the opposite direction. Now i should be able to pinpoint your location with an accuracy in the 5-10m range. Not as good as GPS, but does that make you feel any better?

The only thing that helps somewhat against tracking, is turning the mobile only on for calls and then off again, so that the record is only spotty.
However i heared rumors, that supposedly not all phones turn fully off. Some are said, to still keep connection to the transmission towers. So for those, only removing the SIM card helps.

PS: I'm sure not even Orwell would have thought, that people would one day not only volunteerly carry tracking devices, but also volunteerly pay for them themselfs! :)

...or the battery :).

The point about consolidated.db is however not only that it is *never* cleared (and thus has a pretty longish history) but that it is ALSO copied/migrated when you sync with other devices of the same "kind".
