Hi guys,

please help me resolve the following issue.

Windows XP Pro repair install hangs on black screen with mouse pointer on first reboot.

What I have already done is changed my PCI-E graphic card Gigabyte HD5770 to PCI graphic card with 4 MB of memory - this didn't solve the issue.

Also I have tried to enable VGA mode during boot by pressing F8 with the same result.

My motherboard is Gigabyte GA-EP43-UD3L Rev 1.1

It seems to me that it is related not to graphic card but to something else, since changing to VGA mode doesn't help.

Please help me resolve this issue.

Thank you for your help!

Hmmm.
Tricky.

What happens if you run it with a bootlog switch?
http://www.watchingt...in-windows.html

Try and post the resulting NTboot.log.

Can you also run a memtest?
http://www.memtest.org/

At first sight this is a "troublemaker":
Did not load driver \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\VMkbd.sys
like what 10 attempts to load it?

Since also:
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\kbdhid.sys
fails, you probably :hi: have no keyboard.

It seems to me like you have BOTH VMware and VirtualBox installed to that machine.

I would check offline the Registry and "remove" related services, any "self-starting/loading", expecially these "start at boot ones" by stetting them at start 0x3 first, and then, if needed, deleting the entries...

SCDEMU.SYS should be Power ISO, also another thingy that better not be "autostart", probably there are more.

Check against a "clean" ntbtlog.txt created on a "fresh install" on anothe machine or on the same machine other device and check for differences.

;)

Hi again

I installed fresh copy of Windows XP pro on another hard drive and I have compared services settings on these 2 systems.

These services with start=0 are not present on clear system, so I set them to start=4
dmboot
KL1
PxHelp20
sptd

These services with start=1 are not present on clear system, so I set them to start=4
kbdhid
kl2
KLIF
lbrtfdc

VBoxUSBMon
WS2IFSL

These services with start=2 are not present on clear system, so I set them to start=4

VMnetBridge
VMnetDHCP
VMnetuserif

These services with start=3 are not present on clear system, so I set them to start=4

These services present on clear system, however with different star valuse. Is=how is on my system, should=how is in clean system
FDC is 0 should 3
lanmanworkstation is 2 should 1
Secdrv is 2 should 3
SENS is 4 should 2
Serial is 3 should 1
stisvc is 2 should 3
SysmonLog is 2 should 3

I start install from first stage again (from disk), because when Windows boots it set registry values as it was before editing. However when I start install from disk - this behavior disappeared.

So the situation is the same - black screen with mouse.

Also some services registry values after first windows boot (trying to boot actually) was cleared to that was before editing. These includes
was set by the system back to start=0
dmboot
FDC

was set by the system back to start=1
WS2IFSL

was set by the system back to start = 3
btwhid
BTWUSB
Serial

was set by the system back to start = 4
SENS

Also interestingly that on clean system there was no kbdhid service and the keyboard and mouse still worked. Now when I disabled it mouse also doesn't work (I cannot check keyboard on black screen). Earlier mouse worked fine, only keyboard didn't. But I have distribution of Windows XP pro in which entering serial number can be bypassed so the is not a problem.

Also earlier I tried to boot into last know good configuration and now LastKnownGood value on select key is set to 1. If I set to 2 after Windows boot it set it back to 1.

Also earlier I tried to force XP setup to use Standard PC HAL - may be it have done some bad thing. I have done it using this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283

And finally - here is ntbtlog.txt after done changes

So thank you again for help

The standard PC HAL may have been a "bad" idea, usually the "base" one is "ACPI Uniprocessor PC," ACPI APIC UP HAL (Halaacpi.dll) but that should cause a 0x0000007b BSOD. :dubbio:

You can *try* using this (or part of it's contents):
http://www.911cd.net...pic=22473&st=37
that also does some changes to the CDDB that may "help", but obviously NO guarantees.

Setting services to "4" genearally speaking is not a good idea, unless all dependencies of each service has also been analyzed.

Value can be: 0x0 - Boot; 0x1 - System; 0x2 - Automatic; 0x3 - Manual; 0x4 - Disabled.

The 03 is usually the "safest" choice.

mouhid and HidUsb set to 4 might be connected with the keyboard/mouse, at first sight.

It's a long and troublesome work, but you should couple each service with what it actually does and with it's deendencies in order to determine which one you can safely disable.

It's largely a try and miss game, and unfortunately with no certainty of success :(.

Another thing to have a shot at would be OfflineSysprep, but cannot say if it will help on such a "complex" system:
http://www.911cd.net...hp?showforum=43
