Hello everyone!

I've a problem with my installation, I've read a lot of documents and sites about this program and with a lot of work i accomplished to get the computer to the point where you select an image to install. When the downloading starts it runs smooth but when it comes to about 80 MB the computer restarts.

I bet there's some timeout setting I missed but there might be a problem with some other things because my log tells me there're a lot of things failing.

I've tried for a few hours now but can't find a solution, I can't find any documentation about my problem on the internet.
I hope you guys can help me out!

Maybe adding some trivial details like:
  • WHAT are you trying to boot.
  • HOW are you trying to boot it (EXACT configuration files for BOTH TFTP32 and PXELinux/Syslinux/memdisk AND details of what you are attempting)
May reduce the incertainties due to the crystal ball approach, that today is anyway not available.

In the meantime, you can get a standard reply #32:

I try to install a laptop with windows XP without a dvd drive and no options for boot from usb. This is where my knowledge ends, so i started searching for the network booting option.

I've downloaded tftpd32 and installed it in the folder with the files: pxelinux.0, menu.c32 an memdisk. I've created an folder named pxelinux.cfg and added an file named default and copied this code:
DEFAULT menu.c32

PROMPT 0

NOESCAPE 0

ALLOWOPTIONS 0

TIMEOUT 1000

MENU TITLE My Boot Menu

# NTFS DOS

LABEL DOS with NTFS

MENU Windows ME Startup

KERNEL memdisk

APPEND initrd=nl_winxp_pro_with_sp2.iso

# FreeDOS

LABEL FreeDOS

MENU GPL Version of DOS

KERNEL memdisk

APPEND initrd=freedos.img

# Linux Floppy

LABEL Linux Floppy

MENU Linux Floppy

KERNEL memdisk

APPEND initrd=nl_winxp_pro_with_sp2.iso

My global settings are:
TFTP, DHCP and syslog server are activated

In DHCP I changed the starting address in 192.168.1.10 a pool of 10 and bootfile is pxelinux.0 mask is 255.255.255.0 the rest was changed automatically.

In the TFTP tap I changed security to read only, I've set the base directory and enabled PXE compatibility.

I think till now it's all going pretty well, it all runs and I get to the boot menu. Here I select a option and he starts to copy the data. When 80 mb is copied the computer shuts down and restarts, the tftp still tries to finish to copy the image, the transfer rate keeps the same and it just hangs.

I don't know much about kernels and pre-boot environments, and I didn't change any settings or code in the files to be executed.

How much RAM has the "target" machine? (the one on which you are trying to install XP)
How big in size is the nl_winxp_pro_with_sp2.iso?

If it is a "typical" XP image around 500 Mb, you will need at least 768 Mb of RAM in the machine, i.e. the WHOLE size of the .iso + enough RAM to run the setup.

A typical laptop with NO USB boot is likely to have 128 or 256 Mb of RAM. :dubbio:

You may want to use other less "memory hungry" approaches.

Review this site/approach:
