LinuxLive USB Creator (a.k.a "LiLi") is a free and open-source software for Windows. LiLi creates portable, bootable and virtualized USB stick running Linux.

It is designed to be used by both beginners and geeks.

If you are a beginner, LiLi will let you try Linux for the first time, keeping Windows clean of any modifications.

And if you are a computer geek, LiLi will allow you to test almost any Linux distributions directly from Windows, or just install them from a USB flash drive instead of CDs.

Procedure

LiLi's user interface has been built with simplicity in mind. It is quite straightforward.

Best place to start is the Online User's Guide.

In a nutshell, creating a Live USB with LiLi is a five steps process :

  • Choose your USB key
  • Choose your source (ISO, CD or Download)
  • Choose the size of persistence (available on selected Linux only)
  • Select the options (Portable Virtualization, hidden install, format)
  • Create !

And that's it ! No configuration needed !

Main features

  • Free and Open-Source
  • No reboot needed : built-in virtualization feature that lets you run your Linux in Windows just out of the box !
  • Supports many Linux distributions : Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Debian, PCLinuxOS, OpenSUSE, Sabayon, ArchLinux ... see full list
  • Persistence : Save datas and install software on your Live USB
  • SmartClean : Clean your key from any previous Live USB.
  • SmartDownload : One-click download any supported Linux directly from the fastest mirror
  • Available in various languages : Dutch,English,French,German,Hungarian,Italian,Japanese,Korean,Norwegian,Portuguese,Russian,Spanish,Swedish

Additional features

  • Intelligent processing : works with many Linux, even if they are not officially supported. Can recognize almost any file.
  • Hidden install : LiLi hides the Linux install, your key stays clean
  • File integrity : tells you if your ISO is corrupted
  • No format needed if already using FAT16 or FAT32
  • Intelligent format : can format disks bigger than 32 GB
  • Auto-update : automatic updates when new Linux distributions are available
  • Dual mode : Also works with .IMG files (experimental)

A few technical details

  • software is coded using AutoIT (very easy language)
  • uses syslinux 3.X, syslinux 4.X or Grub4Dos depending on selected Linux
  • uses a custom version of Portable-VirtualBox
  • uses 7zip to extract ISO

Thanks ! I hope that you will continue to enjoy using LiLi.

If some of you are interested in joining the project (mostly AutoIT Coding but I also need a PHP developper for a special project) you can contact me through the website or this forum.

No plan yet but it could be done if it's not too complicated. I've never tried.

It's not my priority since it's called "LinuxLive" :-)

I see. ;o)

If you will want change name. You can check SARDU. It can boot linux/windows live/recovery/install images.

Thanks for your work.

Thibaut,

Just before the end of the procedure, my Symantec Anti-Virus popped-up and deleted the following 2 files:
I:\VirtualBox\Portable-VirtualBox\app32\VBoxNetDHCP.exe
I:\VirtualBox\Portable-VirtualBox\app32\VBoxTestOGL.exe

(I is the letter of the USB key.)

What's going on with that??

Salut Thibaut,

Good work, I use AutoIt and I also find it very complete.
Coming perhaps windows on a liveLinux Live USB Creator, but that's another story, besides the seven passes as a letter in the mail on usb. :confused1:

Coming soon :confused1:

Thibaut,

I have downloaded the latest version of the official VirtualBox v4.02 .
I installed it, and copied the files (VBoxNetDHCP.exe, VBoxTestOGL.exe) from the install dir to the proper location on the LiLi USB key.

The files from the official version seem to be OK.

Some antivirus are too paranoid. There is already a Bug Report filled on the website for this issue.

In a nutshell : it's a false positive due to the fact that binaries have been compressed using UPX.

ericgl> that's another way but it may lead to instabilities since it is a Portable-VirtualBox 4.0 (not 4.0.2).

Be aware that persistence should NOT be used in VirtualBox.

why i cant use persistence in live modus (virtualbox)?
So im not able to save data etc. under live ?

*EDIT*

i cant start the VirtualBox correctly.
It loads the Linux and brings me too the boot menu.
There i select "Live" or "install" and Virtualbox crash.

Persistence should not be used in VirtualBox because :
  • It is simply not working on Seven and Vista
  • It could lead to a corruption of your USB device on XP (very unlikely though)

This means you CAN save your data but not when using your Linux in VirtualBox. I know it sucks but I can't do much about that.

For VirtualBox bug => File a bug report on the website and include logs.

The bad news :whistling: are that Norton (besides being a senseless mass of bloat) is VERY paranoid  .
The good news  are there exist something even worse  (McAfee), or at least with a much worse support :dubbio: .

JFYI, a quite recent issue :confused1::

The risk of a "cry wolf" syndrome is high. :confused1:
