Hi dsolomon,

Yes we definately understand you :) , there are 2 ways provided by LiveXP.

I can not easly test before writing with not being at homepc,
mostly here with an old pc,
but from your replies I can figure out if I am mistaken... :D

1 way:
\Basic\Build\--> enable ProgramFilesPE script
on ProgramFilesPE "Define %ProgramFiles% Location" setting to "Run From CD"

give a try

I will give this a try in my next build. it sounds like this is what i need to do.
i am curious as to what the other way is - i understand your resources are limited ATM.
just want to know all my options :)

Your right! That's the perfect explanation for why portable programs are better!! :D

Why load all your programs onto your boot disk (most you rarely use) and have to wait for a huge image to load every time? Just include the programs you always need and load the rest when or if needed. I never need a LiveXP image larger than 100MB (loads very fast) and have access to 100's of programs whenever needed, don't even have to reboot the PE. Even loading all the programs at every boot still doesn't slow down loading the image.

Also, whenever possible, load the image (ISO) from hard drive. Very easy to setup and you won't believe how fast it boots, under 30 seconds to full working desktop. I setup all my computers, XP and W7 with LiveXP and W7PE images, ready to boot at startup menu. Let me know if you need any help with setup :)

--
The only problem you'll find with Lancelot's method is a noticeable delay in response time when launching programs. Some people don't mind this but it really annoys me :) . Either way, let us know if you need help.

:D

i need a portable CD that i can pop in from computer to computer - i am a IT tech, and i see ALOT of different PCs. So installing my livexp build locally on a hard drive would be a bit of a task.
also, i am playing with the "run from cd" option that lancelot suggested. and from what you are telling me, my programs will be a little slower to launch if i did this.
it makes perfect sense.
hopefully this is a situation where i CAN "have my cake and eat it too" - that being:

1. boot fast
AND
2. launch/run programs fast

Hi dsolomon,

lets go step by step, it is easier to learn and guide one by one than throwing everything all of a sudden. Be sure I will continue guiding through steps. :)

i went from a 3minute bootup to a 39second bootup when i set my "ProgramFilesPE.script" to "run from cd" :)
and i have noticed a difference in launch time for my programs. it is slower - but not TOO painfully slow. i would like to find a way to make my programs launch faster.

i do have a couple of small issues though after i changed the "ProgramFilesPE.script" to "run from cd" on my programs.
most of my programs work, but there are a few "quirky" things that are broken.

Quirk #1

as you can see, my acronis true image shortcut is broken.
the shortcut on the desktop and in my startmenu point to
X:\Program Files CD\Acronis\TrueImage\TrueImage_starter.exe
when they should point to
F:\Program Files CD\Acronis\TrueImage (F:\ is my cd)

Quirk #2
i am missing my quicklaunch shortcuts ;(

Quirk #3
when i try to launch wordpad via run command - i get this error EDIT: this happens even if i run my programs from ram)

that is all i notice so far (after about 30 minutes of using this livexp build)
did i miss something? or is some of the app scripts im using not compatible with the "run from cd" option.

EDIT: this is the acronis script im using, the filename for the script has changed becuase i have added a few registry entries into the original script.

EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:EDIT:
it seems that there may be a issue with "run from cd" and some of the scripts in livexp.

seems that if i can edit the acronis script (and others), to have desktop and startmenu shortcuts to point to %programfiles% rather than %windir% it would fix this issue.

idk...maybe im just waaay offbase with this.

what is the other way? i tried the "run from cd" option already - and it gave me a MUCH faster boot time - but it also broke a couple things.

im interested in the other way you mentioned. what did you have in mind?

but it also broke a couple things.

what are these ??

2nd option is wimpack with wimboot,
read this topic for settings where dsolomon :) asked previously
http://www.boot-land...showtopic=11788
also read this topic to get a view what is going on,
http://www.boot-land...showtopic=12456
on 2nd topic there is a question asking testing on realpc which I could not yet, after succeding on an emulator, if you can test on real pc and report, I will be glad.

3rd option...... later, I wonder what are broken and your test results of 2nd option.

Have fun. :)

also, i may toy around a bit with wimpack. just to see where it gets me.

Hi dsolomon

thanks for support, I put both to my todo list, be sure it will be fixed on next package :)

and a workaround till fixed:
\Basic\Build\--> disable ProgramFilesPE script
on applications you will notice "run from cd" option, so by selecting one by one and leaving acronis and if exists others you still get a smaller .wim file that boots faster :>.

I think so far you get the main idea: with imagetoram builds (wimboot - bootsdi/bootdi), getting the image smaller pushing applications out :) hence boot faster using less ram. wimpack additonally compress the ones that pushed out, I guess you will not have same trouble with acronis when using wimpack....

3rd way is a modified version of amalux way practically used by fms, shortly "ppapps on cd"
check posts around post 357
http://www.boot-land...?...st&p=104512

Further this point, I am sure amalux would help when required :D
:D

you sir, are gentleman and a scholar. :D

i am experimenting with that as we speak.
one question though, what would happen if i enabled \Basic\Build\ProgramFilesPE.script and set my "Define %ProgramFiles%" location" to %SystemDrive%
THEN
in one of my app scripts - i set it to "Run from CD"

would the \Basic\Build\ProgramFilesPE.script override the "run from cd" option in the app script?
or would it run evertyhing from CD no matter what options i set in an app script?

EDIT: figured it out! no worries! =)
